client wants cms functionality added sitewide and is bitching about price.
basically:
four sites in one (large corporation with lots of sub plcs - all told some 150 files with js, numerous css files, php includes, etc. the works, basically) for which we have quoted a cms which allows addition of news, users, etc. but not with functionality to upload pictures or edit main body content.
two questions:
a) what would you charge for limited cms conversion?
b) what would you charge for the full monty?
i just want a few ballpark figures from other developers so that i can rest assured that we're not being unreasonable. but i just don't think we are.
help me build my forcefield for this meeting!
supermuchothanks in advance.
love,

p.s. moth, if i'm not being clear, please feel free to correct my version of the thing!

sounds like a mare, very difficult to quote something without specifics but what was yr ballpark and maybe peeps will say if they think it is reasonable??

the whole thing to begin with (design, development, hosting) came in at just under 8k.
cms system, html email alerts of stock exchange announcements and the development of another microsite (along with various bells and whistles) have been quoted at around 5k (way too little already, imho).

The existing CMS is just for a news section. This was agreed at the time. NewBoy thinks it should do everything for the original cost.
He also thinks a HTML newsletter can be made by:
"I was a little surprised at the cost to produce this template as the template already exists from the PLC website. If we were starting from scratch I could understand it. This should almost be a copy and paste exercise into frontpage / net objects. We would need to see a reduction on this one."

(just from hearing way you posted)
you are dealing with a very cheap "large coporation."you are correct IMO- that is way low a figuree for what you will be impplimenting. been in this situation many times and you are definitly not over charging. btw- what technologies are we talking about w/ both the legacy system and the new proposed CMS?
- determinedmoth0
client said "frontpage"
-1
- determinedmoth0
PHP/MySQL, existing site is 100% W3C validating HTML/CSS.
- determinedmoth0
We coded the site with a view to future CMS expansion.. but that doesn't mean giving it away.
They want control over sections, images, image resizing etc..
- madirish0
yeah,
you guys are spot-on and i would hold to it. you are definitly low and can be confident you are not over charging.
oh, and sorrry about my question- i just realized from your answer moth, that there is no legacy "technology" and that is what you are bringing. i need some more coffee or something...
off hand, is it a home-brew CMS you are proposing, or a mod of a larger community supported LAMP solution? just curious.
- determinedmoth0
home-brew CMS.
it's the only way ;)

bespoke php authored by mothmastermike the superb!
cheers, madirish, that makes me feel better about the whole ugly thing.
worst of all, i have to go to manchester to be verbally abused by this numbskull and his 12-year-old frontpage developing nephew who, no doubt, lurks in the background...
- madirish0
nice. :)
yeah, you guys are fine. ESPECIALLY w/ the FrontPage comment. definitly -1 on that one.
you guys have that sucker accepted by SourceForge yet? ;) My old company developed a LAMP-based CMS as well and we have it there. I always love to see how others dev. these things. sorry, another Q for you- is display seperated from the contend or is it have a pretty developed front end on stand-up?
- UndoUndo0
guys, i'm with madirish on this and agree..hold firm. that sounds like a very good price for what they want and as you said moth the client said 'just' and 'frontpage'...never good.
is this not just corporate mentality?... always say its too expensive to see what you do..
- madirish0
LOL!
that sucks paraselene. manchester has it's upsides, but not when you have a nephew-goon in the corner throwing stones. good luck with it.
i just am never ceased to be amazed at what some clients just think "is already in there, just change it for us, huh?" amazing...
- determinedmoth0
He probably hit "View Source" and thinks that's it.
- determinedmoth0
Source Forge? No way!
We build them for each client... possibly because my PHP isn't too fantasic yet to use modular reusable blah..... You get the idea.Oh - the back-end is dropped into the main site template so it looks all nice.
- paraselene0
moth's backends are some of the nicest i've seen.

...................................he has more than one? WOW
- chickamaow0
what we would do is chareg them for hours worked. amek an estimagte and stick to it.
a way of making it cheaper for them may be to build the system adn let them do the content mgration themselves.
