what gives?
i know its down to hits and such but is there any of these companies that offer high listings for a price that actually do!?basically - like every client - mine wants to be number one.
Ive explained possibilities and likely hood and patience etc but is there anything advice actions that can be taken?
google ads maybe? maybe some other option someone uses?

Hey gpop,
I feel your pain. I actually do alot of seo and it is probably more painful working with stupid clients. For clients on a small budget set them with adwords and do some keyword analysis to show them that the terms they blurt out of there face no one searches for , if thats the case. Adwords will give the quickest results so that you can guage if organic optimization will actually benifit there company.
important factors of seo
1. search term analysis
2. ppc management and opitmization
3. Link building - google pr
4. Organic search optimization
5. Achor text in incoming links
6. Theming
7. other boring stuffq. Why doesn't by web page show up for hairy widget balls 1st place on google.

As you are probably aware search engine marketing is a very competitive industry and to guarantee top rankings and sustainable traffic you can imagine the hours that this would take. My company (abc) offers internet marketing services at $2000.00 a month and would love to sit down and discuss how this could increase revenue and profit.
And of course Google sandboxes new domains and websites for at least 6 month.have fun.

adwords is expensive, but if you're looking for something that costs money then go for it

actually adwords bid amount does not guarantee you top ranking. There ppc actually runs on a simliar algo as googles organic search. ie. If no one clicks your paid ads, they get taken off or go to the bottom of the list. Adversly if your ads gets clicked more, higher ctr, it will go higher on the list, So in theory you can be higher paying 50 cents than someone paying 2 bucks.

overture is more costly, higher ctr and more cost per lead. Depends on your demographic, yahoo and msn are middle aged americans, ie your mom. While google has a large technical base and younger audience, more pc savvy.
its now yahoo marketing and i believe msn has there own ppc system out now. Dropped overture altogether.

root_lock so true, SEO is massive and an industry on its own. those who expect web designers can magically propell them to No1 arent worth the breath.
yahoo search marketing is chaeper than adwords....the real cost depends on yr marketplace....no1 on 'loan' in the uk cost a few million a month...but it depends on the competition, no of searches and no of clicks,
