my powerbook doesn't start up. the harddrive makes some strange noise and then the screen stops at where the question mark flashes.
do you think i lost everything on my harddrive? this really sucks. i am trying not to panic.

That happened to me before. I called customer care and they told me to remove the battery and press the power button on my laptop for 30secs.
Give that a shot!

same thing happened also. lost everything, and bought a new IBM harddisk for it, it's been working great so far but hd's do that to you, but still dont panic, you can still recall the data if you've lost them

i made an appointment at the apple store.
probably something they can fix. i may have to pay it up but i don't care.
probably time to invest on an external harddrive.

Dont panic yet...there's procedures to go through first... you can panic later.
Start here:

ribit,
i tried that. still no luck.fuck it. i am sure they can recover the data.
i am gonna enjoy my lunch now.

What did you try exactly?
It didnt start from the Install CD?
- ribit0
and if it wont start, you could try mounting the disk in target disk mode from another Mac..
- tkmeister0
when i tried, it didn't do anything. i think it needs to be mounted from another mac.
my appointment is at 5pm. so hopefully they can copy over everything.

try booting from the system cd. and repair disk permissions before booting the mac as harddrive on another mac.

it happened to me too, i connected my computer to another mac and saved all my files onto it and then reinstalled my OS. i think that is your only option.
If you have apple care then they will help you for free, they only cover hardware problems and not software related.
- ribit0
But if it wont start from drive or CD, how to do an install... from another Mac?
- madirish0
"if" and that is a big if, it will mount on another machine in target mode, you can then install the OS and/or format that machine (the effed one mounted) from the machine it is mounted to. you can start the good machine (w/ effed one still mounted) from install disk and then choose the drive you wish to format/re-nstall in the menu- in this case the effed one.
if it is a powerbook, and the drive was making physical, audible noises..... well, i am sorry tkmiester, i would be looking at www.geeks.com or another place for a new, fast, wide drive. been there several times w/ powerbooks.

just got back from apple store. they didn't do jack shit. told me it's a harddrive problem and suggested some data recovery places.
i am gonna take my pb to work try to connect from another machine.
do any of you know good data recovery place in nyc?
- madirish0
tk-
will it start from CD?
- ribit0
but if Apple said the drive is dead then you have no hope of connecting from another machine... What I mean is... did they do their job properly and give you a definitive diagnosis?
- tkmeister0
madirish,
yes the drive is making physical audible noises, the same noises i experienced 4yrs ago and lost the harddrive...does this mean even trying to mount from another mac won't work?

shit that happened to me.
HD failed on me, luckily the apple store guys were able to get everything off of it. got a new one couresty of apple care plan, and invested in an external.
good luck
- ribit0
yeah, and what did they say about the fact that its not starting from CD? Thats nothing to do with the drive, and usually means a motherboard problem. (It all sounds very vague and not properly diagnosed so far...)
- ribit0
noises doesnt neccessarily mean it is unrecoverable... I had a drive make noises before it eventually died. First noises, and it mounted, then noises and no mounting (but still accessible through utilities) then finally big noises and no more functionality at all...
Apple should have been able to tell you more details...
