no, i do not think it means it "will not mount" from another machine, it just may not. if it will start up from CD it is a better signal as that means the drive is still able to access sectors. i would try like hell to get the thing to mount on any and every mac you can. if it does, start ripping data from it ASAP. the thing about drive failures, especially physical ones (not data corruption or kernal failure) is that they are random and can cease or keep living at any time.
good luck.
and get an external drive!!!

i can run the hardware Test CD. it checks everything and looks ok.
now installer is showing up. i don't think i should go through the installation, right?
if i do, i'll lose everything? i am opening the disk utility and the harddrive is not showing up. only the cd-rom is listed.

The CD needs to see the CD to do an install...but if you do see it, you could do the first Install choice (refreshes System folder), or second choice (installs new System folder and backs up old System folder). Just dont do the Erase and Install.
- ribit0
erm...that should be:
"The Installer program on CD needs to see the drive..."
- madirish0
that is good if you get a CD to mount and can operate it.
if you go through installation and do not archive the disk (in the options button) then yes, you will overight or format the HD and lose all the data.
if the drive is not showing up in Disk Utility, it means the drive can not be seen and is not repairable to that app. i would try to target mode mount it on another machine.
otherwise, i highly recommend soemthing like Disk Warrior to try and recover the data.
good luck.

You dont even need a drive in the computer to start from CD... the ability to start from the CD doesnt tell you anything about the drive..

I recommend taking it to a disc recovery place. You don't want to risk losing that big project you been slaving on tk.
- madirish0
agreed.
- tkmeister0
alright guys,
thanks for all your help. i am gonna try to mount from work tomorrow and see.
if not, i am just gonna take it to the data recovery service.
- ribit0
and while you are out, go get an external drive, and Retrospect and setup a scheduled daily incremental backup. ;)
- visualplane0
I'm backing up my files now, I been lazy.
- tkmeister0
i was at the store and the guy told me just get a dvd burner and back it up. or u need to get a back up harddrive for the backup...
- tkmeister0
tekserve in nyc charge $400 for 30gb data. i can live with that.
- ribit0
You just need one external drive and Retrospect or similar backup software. If either disk dies you buy a replacement. Simple.
And set it up to be an automated daily backup. Backup should never be something you have to remember to do...
- tkmeister0
so it's gonna cost me $500 that's if they can recover data. plus $250 for a new harddrive installment.
argh. i had to suck it up.
i need a drink.

mine had the same thing but worst.
they said the motherboard completely failed.
the repair was like $200 USD but my compnay willing to pay for it.
- madirish0
that sucks tk, but it is your livelyhood, so it has to be done. wouldn't mount to another machine, huh?
might want to boost that total to an even thousand w/ the new external drive and all. ;)
and $250 for a HD replacement??!! that is a RIP.
