So how do you remove the skateboard from the footage?

the skateboards, wheels, trucks, are all green... (probaly spraypainted.
you film the scene with a computer controled camera with no one in the shot
you then film it with the skaters.
then make everything that is close to that colour green transparant, and let the clip with no people in it be behind the clip with teh skaters (in a layers sense...)

this 'computer camera' setup is called a 'motion control' camera. An operator films the skaters do whatever their doing and the camera records the movements. Immediately after the shot, the camera replays the movement and they shoot a blank to put behind the first shot.
Pretty amazing stuff. Spike's still got it.
Putting in shadows and dust from where ones wheels might be...
talk about tedium.

somehow I don't think a skate video woud have the budget for motion control cameras and set up at all those different locations...
