How do you house train a dog that you got from the pound, is 2.5 years old, and will not do its business in your presence?

well with most dogs you have to catch them in the act and wisk them outside when they're doing it.(trying not to leave a trail of tears behind)
but since he won't do it while youre there, I would suggest indoor-outdoor carpet

put Visine in his soda

that's what I thought. the little shit won't do it when anyone's looking. it must be shy.

first step would be to make sure you are in the dog's presence for so long that (s)he /has/ to go. then follow all the standard house training rules.
at 2.5 the dog should know that business is done outside. perhaps you need come up with a way to let him/her announce (s)he wants to go out.
with one of our dogs we finally resolved this by attaching a wind-chime to the door knob and showing her how to move it with her nose.

when you find "presents" collect them (plastic baggie for poopies and paper towels for peeps) after you let them know that where they did it is bad (by whatever means you have decided to use) and then put the presents outside, where you want them to go. Take them to that spot often to show them that that is where they should go.

crate training.

I'm sure it's like with a cat. A new cat won't eat around you, or sleep near you until it trusts you.

With older dogs you really have to work hard at it. Bring him/her outside very often, get the dog on a strict eating schedule and take them out 10 minutes or so afterwards, only giving them water at feeding time so they do both when they go out.
Get a doggy door if it's an option.
If you're going to be gone from the house for long, you can try those doggy diapers. Put them near the door so they get used to going towards the door when they gotta go...I did all this with my 2 month old puppy and had him trained in 2 days flat. I spent a whole weekend constantly by the dogs side and he got used to it. Now he can hold it for 24 hours if he had to...

wind chimes? I've never heard of that.
the thing is this dog will not go until you're not looking- one poop every two days. this is my sister's dog. I house broke my dog in 2 days and she's expecting me to be able to work magic on this pound mutt. I'm just going to have to stare at the thing until it goes.

crate training is a good idea,
and also you can't punish them for something they did in the fairly distant past, they won't get it.

have you tried making a poopie in the dog's presence?
might break the tension.

dude. you have to walk it outside, drop your drawers, and take a shit in the lawn right in front of the dog. make it watch. then you both get a dog treat.

Wait a second.
The dog will poop, just not when you're watching?
uberdesigner, I think you need to rethink what you do with your spare time. Staring at a dog while it craps seems awfully bizarre.

the dog has shy bowel.
how I spend my time is my business.
