Don't you think that the "move to NYC" argument is a bit inclusive? And by that I mean: I'll move to NYC because that person said they'll move to NYC because someone else said its a good idea...(repeat to fade).
Surely if someone had the balls to either stay where they are or go someplace else (maybe NYC isn't for everyone) then it may (a) get them more credit and (b) wrap up the "do work nobody has ever seen before" bit.
Is it harder to break the market? Probably, yes. But only if you, again, go down a traditional route.
Do whats best. Plus, a timely quote I read in a Banksy book during my first months of my BND which hit me at the time, but now I totally get it:
"Doing work that will bring you money and fame will probably fail on both counts. You don't go into a restaurant and eat a meal to go for a shit".

inside every snobbish artist is a kid who got his crayon stolen. Treat accordingly...
- tparsons0
I stole a whole lot of crayons.....

seed, its true in the 80's there was a massive funding for the arts in NYC, which btw was taken away by our fascist nazi idiot mayor RUDOLF GUILANNI...he cut all funding for all arts in the city during his first year as mayor.
he caused more damage to the art community molding it to what it has become today than any other person in NYC history!!!
i have so much hate for this man for that one signature he put down!!!
GRRRRRRR!!!
guilanni i hate you!!!!!

// Agrees with fate_ and TheTick.
No offence, but warhols work (IMO) is shite. Oh reproduction, reproduction, reproduction, reproduction, reproduction, reproduction, reproduction, reproduction, reproduction, reproduction, reproduction, reproduction, reproduction, reproduction, reproduction.
There you go, i've just described his life's work in 5 seconds.

Interesting point e-pill.

I spend my time between Houston and Austin. I just graduated from art school in NY.
I work on computer based art mostly but have a fondness for conceptual art...
my philosophy:
Fuck Art, I'm from Houston.

1. self promotion
2. talentin that order.

and P.S. moving to New York to find yourself in the art realm is bullshit.
The only end that will lead you to is a stagnation of ideas... Art only exists as an alternative means of expressing new ideas... how can you find new ideas when every other dude in the city is chatting about the latest art fag craze?..
disconnect, make better art.

Fuck. I just wrote some great words of wisdom for you and now they're gone. :^(
Key: Be unique
Have a singular theme (whether be IN the art or something about your style) permeate through all that you do. If you attempt to be everything to everyone, you will become nothing.
Need examples or further explanation, feel free to contact me.

brand your self, is what jeneraa said, i think

(Oct 4 05, 12:57)that was warhol's point. he was mocking the art world, and realized that it was all commercial.
designers should learn from him, since he was the first superstar GRAPHIC DESIGNER
- -scarabin-0
Art is a bunch of bullshit.
fate_
(Oct 4 05, 10:13)it's true. the art scene is overglorified.
the truth is, everything can be art since art is nothing more than a trigger for an internal "moment", an emotional and intellectual reaction.
if you set out to be a "successful artist" you aren't an artist anymore. you are a graphic designer.
- jeneraa0
rockonski, you are right on.
And that fits in with Warhol's image (as I see a complaint in one of the more recent posts). Think about it, people.
I hate when people get all jealous and do nothing to show that they are indeed better. Gain the audience and not only will they praise you, so will I. ...even if I do hate your art. :^)
- tparsons0
Exactly what Rockonski and Jaeneraa said along with the combo of a few other things mentoned above.
Look at the 5 thing in line.

US art: posers on the east, talent on the west

There is a girl on another forum who post images from a lot of LA art shows. Many of the artists like Thomas Han for instance seem like they are successful but not to the point of 'anything I paint command 100s of thousands of dollars because I am IN in the NY art circle' like this person I know expects.I guess it is a different idea of what is considered success.
