Don't you think that the "move to NYC" argument is a bit inclusive? And by that I mean: I'll move to NYC because that person said they'll move to NYC because someone else said its a good idea...(repeat to fade).
Surely if someone had the balls to either stay where they are or go someplace else (maybe NYC isn't for everyone) then it may (a) get them more credit and (b) wrap up the "do work nobody has ever seen before" bit.
Is it harder to break the market? Probably, yes. But only if you, again, go down a traditional route.
Do whats best. Plus, a timely quote I read in a Banksy book during my first months of my BND which hit me at the time, but now I totally get it:
"Doing work that will bring you money and fame will probably fail on both counts. You don't go into a restaurant and eat a meal to go for a shit".
