What is you perception of what it takes to succeed in the
art world today. For example, being a famous painter whose
paintings command big money. Also, are there any online art communities that would
be worthwhile for an up and coming artist to join in
order to gain more exposure?

Work your ass off, promote yourself like crazy, get as much press as possible, and give it like 20 years.
Do work that is unlike anything anybody has ever seen before.
And maybe move to NYC.

That would be another part of my question, do you feel that geographic location matters? Is it necessary to be in NYC? I have met a lot of people who feel that it is.

well you could be a worthless conceptual artist who is above actually dirtying their hands like jeff koons

the trick is all about getting known, and it helps to be a part of the big-time scene. NYC would help, but maybe you can make a name more quickly in a smaller fine-art pond.
IMO, the difference between a famous artist and a great unknown artist is heightened business savvy and smart self-promotion.

other than for the freakily lucky. work and dedication counts more than raw talent.
On any given day you will walk past someone far more talented than you on the sidewalk in whatever chosen field you endeavor in. You just gotta weake up each morning and be more freaking amazing than the day before.
Like always.

I guess the idea of NYC is that someone told me that if you've made it in NY you've made it everywhere. Which I was told is not true with other major US cities.
I am getting the perception that the 'art world' is snobbish and pretentious and fame is based more on who you know and how many rich friends you have rather than actual talent.
- Mimio0
Depends on what you have to say, and who you're trying to speak to.

Art is a bunch of bullshit.

f**k th efakers, just do what you do, do it well, and stuff will happen.
Who cares what some art snob star f**ker thinks as defining "making it" is as long as you got someone who loves you, food on the table and respect of peers?

Good point. I am mostly asking because someone I know with these goals and view that making it in art is based on having a show in NYC and a few rich friends etc is asking me how to use the web to promote himself.
I basically have no idea since I don't understand the process of making it in this snobbish context.
It has actually led me to having some interesting discussions with others about what is success in art.

I've been through art school and the art scene for a bit. It is an odd mix of promotion, passion, talent and drive that will get you to the top off the so called art world. but as you get there... there will be many many people sayiong you don't deserve to be there. take basquiat as an example.
to this day I know of poeple with some weight that talk crap about him and his work, yet it goes for millions. Don't forget he maybe got a couple thousand for a painting that goes for millions today.
so in the end it is a mix bag and your greatest fans aren't even alive yet.

^ if that's your attitude to it? just give up now man. the art world is "snobbish" only because it's populated by society's strangest eccentrics. many of them have serious social problems.
have some compassion.
you'll need it to deal with all the fakes and fags. :P

You should read some warhol, he has some great insights to his world of art and society and why he did so well in it.

provided the work is good - making it in the artworld is much like politics... with a higher percentage of homosexuals.

machito, I'll check that out. e-pill, there is no show at the moment as far as I know.
I had an interesting talk with my photo teacher about this attitude towards art that led to a talk about the 80's art scene compared to now. He was telling me that one difference in the 80's and why so many people blew up at the time is that a lot of money was being put into art and that everyone was afraid to miss the next big thing. Sort of echoed in the Basquiat movie where Warhol says, I just don't know what's good anymore.
