I've been through art school and the art scene for a bit. It is an odd mix of promotion, passion, talent and drive that will get you to the top off the so called art world. but as you get there... there will be many many people sayiong you don't deserve to be there. take basquiat as an example.
to this day I know of poeple with some weight that talk crap about him and his work, yet it goes for millions. Don't forget he maybe got a couple thousand for a painting that goes for millions today.
so in the end it is a mix bag and your greatest fans aren't even alive yet.
