(Sep 30 05, 18:41)they already know that. when i met with them they told me about their first website and how they hired a guy who wasn't a designer to do the site for cheap.
i'm ready to walk away but i really hate to turn my back on this gig. professionally it has alot of value for me. at the same time, it wouldn't be professional to do the job below my range. i'm not going to play that game. i'm always willing to negotiate but $500 isn't even a starting point.

go slash that other bidders tires.
But seriously, I feel your pain. These types of people need to save that barter shit for the bootleg sales in Times Square and shit.
I mean $500? That can't even cover most people's overhead.

I know $ matters, but the progression of public design awareness is going to matter in the years to come. You may change that clients perspective on designers, thus everyone connected to them, thus "our" future clients. keep that in mind, And the chain keeps going...

(Oct 1 05, 00:13)That's excellent advice. I'm going to do that. If I can't convince them, I'll let them know my services are still available and set the proper perspective on real designers.

I hear ya brothah. I haven't had a hack undercut me like that for a few months but every now and again it happens and just pisses me right off.
Usually when the client says something like "so and so will do it for a wooden nickel and a pat on the bum." I laugh in their face, to make sure they understand how much of a joke the other bidder is and then I tell them some stories about clients that have gone cheap to begin with then come back and paid me what I asked for in the first place.
For instance, if I say it'll cost 2K and someone else says it'll cost 800 then I tell them that by choosing the lower bidder they're actually going to end up paying 2800 once everything is said and done because they'll spend the 800, get a shit product and then eventually turn around pay the 2K to get it done properly later on down the road.
So, they should save themselves some time and money and do it right the first time.
After all, a website is an investment in their business, if they don't care enough about their business to get it done properly then that's their problem.
It sounds really harsh but it works . . . sometimes.

fuck that.
if they are even entertaining the idea of a $500 site drop them now; they are a bad client.

Hello-Sexy has a very good point.
