i'm super frustrated right now.
i did an estimate for a website. pitched some good ideas, wrote a nice brief on the project, had a good vibe with the client.
now someone has come along and bid

You should feel good about what you contributed. You cant win them all but atleast you were happy with what you submitted.

now someone has come along and bid >$500 for the website and the client is asking me to be competitive.

(Sep 30 05, 15:28)Yeah but this stuff has to stop. I hate people who charge $4 and hour for this work. I'm very conscientious with my pricing. I really look and the projects and do honest assesments of how much time/effort is going to be involved. I always let the client know what exactly they are paying for and what's involved.

I do agree and the client will more often then not go for the cheap site. Then when they realize when the sites done and the kids gone and all of a sudden they need client support, have updates or need new work done they realize they chose the wrong person initially and hopefully will make a wiser decision down the road.
My best to you.

AMEN. I had a client/friend make some sort of comment about how
"not everyone can do her job." and I said,"tell me about it. some dumbass has a computer and thinks he's a designer. I didn't spend all those years in school because i'm slow or stupid." since then, she has not tried to make snide comments about my work.don't worry, even if you don't get this client, your next one will appreciate your quality and knowledge over some shmoe's cheap shite.

I had a client almost stop a job because, with all of his changes, I was about ready to do a change order. He said to me on the phone,"Just stop everything where it's at. I can't afford to pay more, I'm just a small company. I'll have one of my employees do it for free. That's what i did last year. It's only a yellowpage ad."
me - "Did you notice that your ad for last year had the incorrect web site?"
change order was signed and faxes back.

The client has a site now that they are really unhappy with because they did the same thing last time.
I knew they didn't have a good understanding of what it means to get involved with a designer. when i met with them i really took them through the process.
the kicker is that this would have been a really good final product. i was really excited about the job. it had my wheels spinning more than anything i've done lately. that's why i'm so frustrated because its not just another one that got away, it was a really good gig with great potential.

(Sep 30 05, 15:41)My stipulation was that you have to produce all your work in Adobe PageMill for me to hate you. Well technically, if you use PageMill and you don't go around undercutting people with WalMart prices, we're still cool.

I meant to say, my kid is older than 16

talk with them about your concerns over them doing the same thing over again. Go through the whole process of explaining how they are limiting their potential and that cutting corners on a crucial business identity piece will only hurt them again.
I'm sure you don't want to waste the time repeating yourself, but it's worth a shot, right?
Or resubmit a bid that has the $500 knocked off and then itemized your consulting fee, client support, updates, etc. Show them where your value is.

(Sep 30 05, 15:46)Does he need a website? I'll go it for $12 obo

let me clarify, the itemized part of my suggestion would have been above the "competitive" fee.
