i just got a d50 and for $600 i like it quite a bit. Image quality is amazing, the camera feels sturdy. my friend bought the new digital rebel, which uses the same sensor as the 20d and i wasnt so impressed. the rebel feels really plastic and light.

I think you guys all hit the mark.
If it were me, personally, I would go with the canon. Yeah it sucks you are nikon, but then again didnt you say that you have all AI lenses? Yeah these lenses should work just fine, but you definitely wont have the advantage of using the technology that comes with current lenses... but do you have to ask yourself do you care?Just keep in mind that in the the professional photo world, canon wins hands down. Go to any website like http://www.dpreview.com , http://www.robgalbraith.com , http://www.luminous-landscape.co… and read the tests. I'm sure you would be happy with either, but my choice will always be canon. Their R&D budget alone sells me on that fact.
Hope this helps

to be honest I'd not even thought about canon. More mulling to be done I reckon.

digital slr threads always leave you more confused than ever

I don't know if anyone has suggested it yet, but the Olympus e-300 with the dual lens kit for $999 is the best deal by far. I looked at the d70 and the canons and the Oly kicks both their asses up and down the street. Test it. you'll see.

ya'll are trippin.. the most superior camera by about 15 miles is the new Fuji FinePix S3 Pro. it's a full on digital medium format SLR. it simulates film stocks, shoots something like 12.5 MP, is absolute fucking insane! that's what you wanna be getting, homeslice!

yay, thx rand.
most of the review i read on canon vs nikon came down to preference...quality/features are at level. i like the feel of the nikon camera.

the lens talk for Nikon is bullshit. I shoot with 2 non DX lenses that are automatic on my D70 and get great photos with them.
see my photoblog for photos all on a D70: http://www.pfosphene.com
The DX is probably of higher quality slightly, but I'm completely happy price considered with what comes out of used lenses on a D70
I have
70-210mm 4.5-5.6
50mm 1.4
and the kit lens.

And I've never had problems opening RAW straight into Photoshop.
in the RAW vs JPEG vs TIFF, I liken it to taking your film to a developer or doing it yourself in a darkroom.
RAW hands down is better for control of your final photo. Re-adjustment of your white balance, exposure, shadows, contrast etc. are all things I wouldn't give up to shoot jpeg and save space.

spiralstarez
how do you like the 50mm 1.4 lens on your d70? Is it very crisp?
- spiralstarez0
I just got it so still playing, but so far so good. I'm happy with it for the good price I paid for it ($130)

hey spiralstarez, some great stuff there on pfosphene, looking good for the d70
