i am going to purchase a new laptop or tower and not sure what i need for what i want to do and why one is better than the other. another thing i need help with is RAM and Memory, how much do i need.
currently i am running on an iBook 3gig harddrive G3 macos 8.6
old stuff and all my programs are old too ai-9
ps-5 flash-4 and so on.some people told me to get a Powerbook 15" and get a 20" flat screen display or get a powerbook 12" with 20' display or 17" powerbook...
i am so confused to what i need.

how mobile are you.. do you travel a lot? do you work in cafes all the time... do you freelance and go to clients offices etc...
if you are on the go more.. i would opt for the 15 inch...

15" with a 20", lots of ram, but wait till Oct. It's almost PB update time again

ram?
memory?
hard drive space?how much does it cost loaded?
how much does it cost stock?
is the 17" so much better? and why over the 15"?
THANKS!

If you are currently using an iBook G3 running OS 8.3
ANYTHING will be such an upgrade that you will be good to go.
Just get as much computer as you can afford.

i am just starting to freelance comming off an 8 year fulltime work.
i travel a lot over seas but used company puters.
i persoanly dont carry any bags as i design them i want nothing to do with them, i am not sure if i would take the puter, but if i did get it i would take it out of the house.
the screen size i am working with now is 800x600 i want something larger as at werks i use 1280x1024.
this is why i am confused, do i get just a 15" and stay satisfied or get the 17" for colour accuracy, and is there ever going to be a G5 powerbook?
:)

The 15" and 17" have the same screen type, just different resolutions, so color accuracy will be the same.
Sounds like the 15" is a better fit for you.
Get as much RAM as you can afford.

If you get the 15" you will cry over not getting the 17". WELL DON'T COME CRAWLING BACK TO ME and you WILL hear "I told you so"... You're just as mobile, you just get more street cred with two extra 2". So don't listen to anybody else.

jox need to 2" extra, or else he wouldn't have anything at all
- jox0
you want my 2" extra you lil bish!

15 is great.. i have friends that have the 17 and i personally think its too big for lugging around airports, buses.. much easier to bring around... the 12 inch is WAYYY too small

i have a 17" powerbook G4 which i think would be ideal if i were freelancing. real nice display space for clients, highly recommended.

15" and the external monitor = good to go

i'd get 15-inch.
someone said something about waiting til Oct.
i'm actually about to buy 15 PB, and am wondering how sure you are about this October time frame - i'd rather buy now if updates are not gonna happen til 06.

tower:
how much space do you have?
do you need maximum speed?
how much traveling do you do?
will you want to use your computer around the house?
are you comforable using your computer in only one room?
how interested are you in upgrades and performance modifications?laptop:
do you need the portability?
do you want to travel with your computer?
are you willing to sacrifice speed and performance?
are you willing to sacrifice internal upgrades?
do you have a small working space that needs a small computer?basically you need to figure out what you need vs. what you want and adjust accordingly.
i got a laptop mac (ibook) and sometimes wish i'd just dropped the extra money and got a nice tower. i mainly do web based work but when i do create print work i can see the difference in speed.
also, with my ibook i downloaded a 'hack' that allows for dual monitors, not just a mirror external monitor.
think about it.

15" on the move, connected to external 23" display at office/home... best of both worlds..

thanks everyone!!!!
:)
i am stuck on btwn a 15 with large flat display or 17 on its own or a G5 pb when even it comes out.
i dont think i want a tower as i am getting by with the g3 ibook with only 160 megs ram and 786megs ram available space.
i think a powerbook is what i want, plus i love when i vist my friends houses and they have airport and everyone has a laptop but me.
but i will assimilate and get one!
