    tower:

how much space do you have?
    do you need maximum speed?
how much traveling do you do?
will you want to use your computer around the house?
are you comforable using your computer in only one room?
how interested are you in upgrades and performance modifications?

    laptop:
    do you need the portability?
do you want to travel with your computer?
are you willing to sacrifice speed and performance?
are you willing to sacrifice internal upgrades?
do you have a small working space that needs a small computer?

basically you need to figure out what you need vs. what you want and adjust accordingly.

i got a laptop mac (ibook) and sometimes wish i'd just dropped the extra money and got a nice tower. i mainly do web based work but when i do create print work i can see the difference in speed.

also, with my ibook i downloaded a 'hack' that allows for dual monitors, not just a mirror external monitor.

    think about it.
