I really dig the design - very elegant!
The Lorem Ipsum on the right side (that runs throughout) is long enought that the drop-down and/or menus below vertically align with the botom of the other thumbnails nicely.
That may pose a problem if their copy for those sections is much longer/shorter.
You may have already looked into that, just thought i would add that to the other comments.
i like it!

I'm confused because one post said the client liked the second link, then the other said they liked the first, so, ummm.. bear with me in my 2 cents.
If the client indeed did pick the first with the white bg, I can see why, based on the AIA site. Makes sense. And it's probably so a listed architect or architectural group doesn't get preference over another. Aside from that junk, the white layout allows you to simply focus on the info and images...
BUT, to be honest, I think all the damned white is boring. Though I like the functionality.
So, to finally answer your q, I like the colored layout.
If, however, Andrea V. Architects do not typically design woodsy homes/execute woodsy style projects, then it is best to not use it because it gives a bit of a false image for the AVA peeps.

jeneraa - take a look at the date of the original post... a bit dated.
Threads are getting bumped up to the top without anyone (visably) posting a response.
qbn ghosts... or some hacker.

The clean version is a winner.
