my wife and I will be in SF sometime in early October and are hoping for some must-see, must-do food/drink/culture suggestions, especially within walking distance. It looks like we'll be staying in an apartment on Hallidie Square (a few blocks from Union Square) across from the "San Franciso Shopping Center", whatever that is.
many thanks!

Enjoy my friend, I had an amazing time there last September with my girlfriend.
You absolutely must, must, must rent bicycles and ride across the Golden Gate Bridge. One of the best experiences of my life.
I think this is the place we used:
http://www.blazingsaddles.com/If you have time/money, I would also suggest taking a bus tour to Sonoma and Napa Valley. We did one that took us to Muir Woods as well, but the wineries we went to were not so good. Our driver/tour guide seemed like a bit of a naturalist/hippie/burnout, she was nice but took us to some places because the people were her friends. Took us to a great restaurant in Sonoma though for lunch.
http://www.buysanfranciscotours.…If you want more suggestions on the wine tours, let me know. Having gone on one I feel like I could easily pick out ones that may be better.
Alcatraz - I'll admit, I thought it was a bit cliche at first, but we took the night tour, and all I will say is: Take the night tour, you will have one of the best times there.

catch a dinner and a movie at foreign cinema, they have a nice bar next door called Laszlo. make a reservation.
http://www.foreigncinema.com/hom…SFMOMA, yerba buena center for the arts, 49 geary galleries, 111 minna st. for some art.
millenium restaurant for excellent vegetarian fine dining. hayes valley, the mission(valencia st) has some nice restaurants/bars. In north beach Tosca is a classic sf bar. The peacock lounge, if open, has a funky bartender that will kick you out if you don't order a martini.
public transit, bart and muni, can take you most places easily so don't get suck downtown.
take the train to ocean beach and walk on the sand and have a drink at the beach chalet. take a ferry to tiburon and dine at a nice restaurant.
The weather in early october is nice and warn usually. Indian summer.
