For IM I use Adium, best application ever for IM. For Talk I use Skype best application for talk over the net ever. Its a real Internet telephone software very smooth. Works cool on conferences, works great to fixes phones an mobile and it free also skype to skype!! Now all company are doing the same...and yeah, beta version!?! They still have Gmail as a beta! :D

Like fuck I'm installing that, I still haven't found an option to turn off gmail adding every single person I email to my contacts list so I'm sure as shit not wanting all those people in my google talk thingy.

just cause I have had a good experience with this app and it provides all your 'simplicity' desires, as well as cross-protocol options.... I'm gonna mention http://www.miranda-im.org again
Jabber plugin is available too, which means if need be, it should be able to talk to the GoogleTalk network too....

actually, it does add everyone I email to my contacts list, but the first page lists people who I have frequently emailed, which is ok. I would prefer to not have all those emails on my contacts list though.
