I have some 3d animations I want to import, can i some how delete the white space or filter it out on this clip in a quick way in aftereffects?
- MichaelFelt0
Do you mean you want to remove the background???
- Bullitt0
yes, the backgrounds just white.
- vespa0
i don't know much about 3d but the 3d Channel Extract filter looks promising. Have a look in after effects help.
But if you just want to key out a flat colour, use Effect > Keying > Color Key and change the colour to white.

the colours already white, I need a transparent background
- Bullitt0
There must be a filter surely, that can make a background transparent, you can do it with a few filters in photoshop.
anyone?

But if you just want to key out a flat colour, use Effect > Keying > Color Key and change the colour to white.

color key is the one to use, it defaults to a blue color as blue red and green are typical key colors. Once in the key window click on the dropper tool next to the blue squarwe then click on the white in your project window. Adjust tolerances and feather and edge thinning to suit.

keying is the term for setting a colour to transparent. key out the white.

- paddywop0
why not duplicate the movie, and using hue/saturation, levels ect... make an alpha matte of it?
- Bullitt0
paddy, is that easy? tried the keying thing, seems to have done the job, thanks
whats does a parent mean ( AE term)?

bullit parent is like a guide layer if you will.
Say for example you move one layer from the left to the right over one second and half the width of your canvas. call that layer one.
If you say to layer two to be parented by layer one then layer two will do exactly the same as layer one!!
- chossy0
:\ has vespa got a little whallice !
- paddywop0
parenting is used for one layer to control another, you wont use that for this.
To make a matte -
duplicate the movie and apply whatever effects so that your white background is still white, but the object in the movie is jet black.
Once you have that, place it dircetly above the original movie on the timeline.
Then on the original movie, in the second column of the timeline select from the 'TrkMat' option whichever one of the four options that works, as when you select one of them your white will disappear.
Does that make any sense?
ps- if the second column on the timeline is showing the motion blur/ 3d layer option ect, then go to the bottom and click where it says Switches / Modes.
