I don't think that what fate said was way off the mark - or rascist.
You could say exactly the same thing about designers in Hong Kong. of course...there will always be stand outs and exceptions to the rule - but both countries have such a different design culture to them - one that is pretty far behind that of western countries like the UK and US

i'm Indian and i've worked in 4 countries and 3 continents so far [i am a 3D outsourcee] and i can see why you hold the opinion you do fate. i dont think its racist at all.
its just unfortunate that you tangled with the wrong kind, but its a shade insular to club 'bad design' and 'Indian' together. i agree that Indian web design isnt rocking anything inernational at present [exceptions being nik khilnani and amit pitaru], and i dont have much to offer in defence.
i'll go back to my earlier statement that vernacular is that. and design will always remain culture specific, hence the definitions of good and bad.
some excellent Indian designers never cut it internationally, but thats less to do with their capability and more to do with their briefs [er.. pun intended].
there is an amount of piss taking that defines Indian visuals. Indian street graphics will give you a slight impression of that.

in my opinion, indian graphic design is at the same stage where american web design was at the boom of the internet... heavy photoshop + less concept...
there are ofcourse exceptions...
as far as developers r concerned... they kick american ass pretty bad... look at the annual programming contests rankings.. indians/asians/eurpeans at the top always...

i don't know what the going rate for design/development work in india is going for but i can give you a real world break down of what my company has been doing for the last year...
we had been uploading massive amounts of images to china to have retouch masks built in photoshop... very tedious work if you have 500 images for a catalog. for $5 U.S. (per image)you would get a photshop document with just the alpha channels an overall body mask if it was a figure or person... a flesh mask and a clothing mask... you would then apply those masks to ther original image here... it was also a 24 hour turnaround!
i found out monday that china is now out of the equation because they found an indian vendor that's cheaper!
like i said the end is near!

I've already been contemplating leaving computer programming/design long ago. Don't put all your eggs in just one baskets or something like that. Better to be versatile.
