?!
most of those are EUROPEAN quotes...the rest are football quotes?!
and this one:
The American character looks always as if it had just had a rather bad haircut, which gives it, in our eyes at any rate, a greater humanity than the European, which even among its beggars has an all too professional air.

Anyway, wasn't trying to spark the tired US Canada debate again earlier, just saying if you haven't been here and don't know about it, don't generalize

One of the driving forces of the American Revolution was the escape from the political and religious tyranny of the British Chrisitan theocracy. (King George III was the head of the Church of England)
Many Christians signed the Declaration of Independence, the official proclamation of our secular, pluralistic democracy, even though it contained no religious language, because they understood that it meant that the government of the United States could not interfere with THEIR PERSONAL religious beliefs and that it could never form a single, state run religion. Thye also UNDERSTOOD that it meant that the religious and philosphical beliefs of OTHERS, which might be much different than their own, would also be protected. That is why the Untied States Constitution provides for the separation of church and state. According to law, and the wishes of our founders, no religious group or denomination (i.e. the religious conservatives) can have undue influence over the operation of the government of the United States and it's citizens.

seperation of church and state was designed to prevent the state from meddling in the church's affairs. The founding fathers would spin in their graves if they knew it was being twisted to remove Christian principles from the public arena. Just look at how founders like Jefferson allowed Christian gatherings in rooms in the public and political facilities.
