Go hang out with old people (grandparents etc.), that'll re-align some of your perceptions.

When in doubt, use a black and white photograph of a railway yardput , and fiddle with the curves.
Works a treat on my girlfriend, mind you, shes a gradient adjustment layer over it.

don't worry it is the summertime just now and everybody is rutting - you're not the only one.

nothing matters, and everything matters

mr_snuggles: "Why? Most artists/ passionate designers have the same temperment which usually entails hating everything you've done in the past and looking towards the future and next project. Emotional turmoil would naturally come with the territory.."
I hear you man, I totally agree!

i say go to a homeless shelter or to an old folks home and help some people out. i mainly do that to feel beter about myself which is probably pretty selfish, but it helps me recognize how hard i am on myself when we all really have it so good compared to others that don't have the opportunity to do what they love...

No such thing. Take a trip somewhere to free your brain.

happened to me this summer salli...no inspiration whatsoever.. but it came back...it always does

My motivation to create in the last weeks is like -30 in a scale of
0 > 100.due to my full time work of babysitting

I know kodap, allow your son to finger paint at the soonest possible moment and then work around it. :)

Lost interest in design a year ago and the interest hasn't come back. All of a sudden I'm aspiring to get an MBA in a different field. Applying this spring. Basically killing my (graphic design) babies.
Don't be afraid of change if that design urge donesn't come back. ...and I guess moderate if it does, not to burn out.

man, you do good work salli.
just relax, it'll come back. i had a bad spell recently too but pulled thru ok.i think the way to get thru a bad block only begins when you acknowledge it is happening. so well done.

i read a fascinating article in the independent (?) the other day called 'since when was work supposed to make us happy?'
the author was explaining how, for our generation more than any other to date, the pressure and anxiety surrounding the whole project of 'finding your calling;' that one perfect thing that you love to do and are happy in, has become more stressful than work itself.
we change careers, cities, homes and lovers constantly, looking for that perfect fit. we believe in perfection, in perfecting our own lives. me, i'm think it's worth it - battling all the attendant demons of this mentality - but it's not easy. it's like i'm preprogrammed to feel like i'm in a rut after i've done the same thing for six months or a year.
i'm not sure what the long-term implications are going to be. with any luck, i'll just end up being perfect...

have no fear of perfection, you'll never reach it.
- Salli0
Thank you, forcetwelve! And you may be right.
Parsalene, that's interesting. But I think it's good to strive for perfection, even though I am aware of the fact none of us will ever reach is. But I think if one wouldn't strive for betterness, he would as a matter of fact 'stand still'. It's good to have ambitions, but you gotta be realistic. Changings jobs and moving places all the time can't be good in my opinion.
As for me, that is not at all going to happen.. I'm just experiencing a bad spell, as forcetwelve says and normally I wouldn't acknowledge it's happening, I guess?
And you know, I normally get a super load of inspiration on the wrong moments, like when you're laying in bed, being at a place where you don't have a pen and or paper.. I wonder when I'll be getting it.. :)
Thanks!

sounds like you need a holiday, we all go through this. human bodies can only take so much. take some time out and breathe

I would like to add that, I just realized, while watching a debateshow at BBC, that it's a good thing to focus on something different than -in my case- graphic design when you're in a rut.. besides reading books I'm going to focus myself on streetphotography. I'll just take my cam with me while going to the market or whatever place. I got inspired!
So, when being stuck in a rut, it might be a good thing to focus your mind on different things instead.
