DVD back up

I'm thinking about doing all future archive backup to DVD rather than CD and wondered if anybody had any horror stories about DVD backup what with large amounts of data at risk and readable media/scratches, etc. We're looking to reduce the physical storage space in the office.

*bump
Any opinions on this? I'm thinking of switching to DVD as well but am concerned about media reliability and the time it takes to burn/access data on DVDs vs. CDs.

I have a few things stored on dvd. My concern is that because the data is more dense, a smaller scratch has a more detremental effect on the disc. DVDs are more fragile than CDs.
Unfortunately some of these projects are too large for a CD.

You need excess redundancy, then. Why make one DVD backup when you can make 3 and distribute them safely?
I've got all my old files (though I mean my old, shitty files) on 2 sets of DVDs - one lot here, another at my office.
Though, I don't have mountains of stuff..

What is your work worth to you? I back up data on dvd and record back to dv so I at least have a linear copy to fall back on. Ten extra dollars for peace of mind.

I back up on dvd and an external 250 gb firewire drive. It nice to have atleast two backups + the work is still on my computer.

I try not to consider external hard drives as back-ups, since there is no easy way to back them up and they can fry like any other hardware.

I'll just shut up now

sorry bro, just conversatin, its Just that I have hard drives fail and only been left with linear versions of projects before. Keeps it real though... I almost miss linear editing sometimes.... sometimes ;-)

Redundant copies is probably the way to go. Currently I have tape and CD backups of archived work, and two redundant copies of our jobs server on two terrabyte drives. I'd love to go to a totally hard drive based archive system, but that's probably not a reliable option. In the meantime, multiple copies of DVD backups will at least free up more storage space.
Damn - so much data to deal with. Our archives go back 15 years.

not a problem, I just finally got to the point where i'm backing up on a regular basis so it's a big step for me to have two back ups. I don't have any mis guided notion that the ext. drive is failsafe but there is some comfort in it.
*burns some dvds

i switched to backing up on dvds (files too large for cd, tons of project assets, etc.). found out about medical grade dvds. they are supposed to be good for 300 years (we'll see), but they have an extra layer of anti-scratch protection on them. i will say this, they are VERY hard to scratch and pretty hard to break.
anyway...my 2ยข...
