Redundant copies is probably the way to go. Currently I have tape and CD backups of archived work, and two redundant copies of our jobs server on two terrabyte drives. I'd love to go to a totally hard drive based archive system, but that's probably not a reliable option. In the meantime, multiple copies of DVD backups will at least free up more storage space.
Damn - so much data to deal with. Our archives go back 15 years.
