I am thinking of getting one of these, I can get them for about the same amount.
I am trying not to spend to much and I want something as compact as possible for a DSLR.
I took a couple photography classes in college but I sucked at it, I'm kind of still just trying to figure out the technical side. I figured a dslr would be easier to learn on. I dont need the fanciest camera so thats one of the reasons I'm trying to decide on one of these.
So does anybody have any opinions on these 2 cameras or familiar with pentax dslrs?
Thanks

A things to watch for:
1. You're gonn have to worry about things like white balance with a digicam-- ther are a few more techincal aspects to worry about over film, so if you thought it was difficult before, you're going to want to take some time to learn the in's and out's of digital photogrpahy.2. like the other comsumer DSLR's the Pentax has a focal-length ratio of 1.6:1.0.
That means any of your old lenses will shoot 1.6x the focal length-- only the pro camera's have an equivalent ratio to film, and they're $10K, at least.
3. Lastly, pentax has been on a bit of a downward spiral for the past 5-7 years, and technologiacally speaking, they're a few steps behind both canon and nikon-- I'd recommend researching the equivalent cameras from each company-- you're likely to get better software and the digital rebel is a decent price now, though if you're looking at a working camera, I'd suggest the 20D at the very least.Good Luck

Yeah right now this is just for personal use, I would like to eventually use it for some projects once I learn. I am just trying to step up from compact digi point and shoot.
I think the DL is supposed to be a step down from the DS even though its newer, they said they were doing that to make it more affordable, but right now they are the same price. So I guess the DS would be the smarter one to get, but I am not sure since I don't know what all is important in a camera.

Resolution is the big thing-- If you want to anyhting worht print with your photos, then you should be lloking at a 6MP camera-- look at the lens selection, too-- better glass can improve upon lower res.
(in that respect, i'd again look at either Canon--my personal pick-- or nikon-- they've got better glass than pentax.
Go to a camera shop and ask quesitons-- the folks behind the counters are usually themselves photogs-- and read up on the cameras.have a look at
http://www.photo.net
They've got a decent amount of information on the cameras.

Yeah I really don't want to spend that kind of money on a canon or nikon unless I find a super deal, since I'm pretty much an ametuer.
I am going to stop by bestbuy and circuit city on my way home from work to see if they do have any open box sales on a nikon or canon. But that probably won't happen thats why I have decided on one of the pentax's. Trying to see which is the better of the two.
