Since a lot of the people here are designers I wondered what you think is a reasonable rate these days... do amateur website builders screwing up the rates of professionals?

thats what i have been quoted

nothing lower than $25/hr

That's very reasonable, most I know ask anywhere from 70 euro or up.. as they say: you can get a plumber for 75 per hour so a designer should be more expensive...

55 euro/hour minimum.
depending on more demands (skillwise) this can easily go up to 120 euro per hour.

I would say $60 to $100 US. is fair

for me, it really depends on the projects length, scope and most importantly the stress level.
i charge mim $55 to $150/hr.

Hourly rates are clear now but of course it's also a matter of hours... do you always charge beforehand or do you make an extra calculation afterwards as well? I always work with project prices myself.

i have another question, if you are a freelancer on an hourly rate and you are sent on a business trip, should all hours be charged? or only working hours and travel? anyone have experience in this?

That's an interesting question... it depends on what kind of trip it is. I did a big assignment a few weeks ago and they wanted me to attend the event, just in case something would go wrong. They paid for tickets, transfer, hotel, had a driver and a converter (it was in Russia). This way it was a nice 2 day break for me and an investment in deepening the contact between us. I think you should do it this way: make sure ALL costs are covered (so flight, transfer, hotel, transportation etc), maybe not food but this is possible and negotiate a price for the actual work you do, this may be higher than usual. They won't pay you for sleeping ;), but I always think like this: while I was in that plane I could have worked on another project... just try to balance it and try not to be too arrogant, in that case they will often give you a nice rate. It's a matter of giving and taking. Do you charge for business meetings with clients?
