I have read many many newstodays...throughout college newstoday helped me in realizing i was a stupid cocky student...anywho...i have always read that everyone seems to have shitty corporate clingy design jobs where 95 percent is garbage...
well...
i always thought this was just, well...
i graduated a month and a half ago and well...tear.
i am right there with you.
its been a month and i want to cry...i feel my boss is a moron...he's a side docker...damn i hate side dockers. and they still have computers on 9. and yesterday he told me i cant use helvetica anymore...now I can handle alot of shit...tell me to make the smallest font on the business card 13pt...fine...sit down to explain if i know what a "screen shot"(with hand motions and everything)...fine...but dont take away helvetica. now what am i going to use.
Well.
does it ever get better?
Please.

Use Avenir. I love it.

Fight back!
Don't be a puppy from the beginning, say no if you don't agree with your boss. I might cost you your job, but you will have the balls afterwards to get a good job you will like.
My dad gave me that advice, when i had my first real job and complained about it.
I lost my job on it, but found a really good one within a week.
- Visia0
well, that's not bad advice.
But in the end, to anwser your question. No, it doesn't get any better.
I work for myself, at my house. I answer to no one. EXCEPT, and this is a big except. My clients.
In the end you can take away all the bosses in the world but clients are still clients. Learn to deal with shit and you'll have a good time. Get pissed because you can't use Helvetica anymore then start looking for a new job.
Welcome to the industry.

Voodoo hair-dolls.
'nuff said.
- peiter0
thats rad...
i picture you like bruce willis in die hard...and your hanging out a broken window with blood stains yellin..."welcome to the party pal."i can dig it.
i guess its just time to man up.i was just hoping things would be...well i dont know private office, dual monitors, receptionist that say good morning with a coffee and paper each morning, 125 k per year, solid benefits, vacation, big screen television, gucci, you know, everything ewan says in trainspotting.
delusions give me a buzz to work like coffee in the morning.

most people wish they were having a better time between monday and friday during the hours of 9 to 5, designers are no exception.
just do self-indulgent design for fun on the weekends and use all the helvetica you want.
- fake_it_up0
yeah dude work on side projects and do collabs with people... try new shit and you will have fun and stay fresh
- Visia0
lol, that's the first time anyone has ever compared me to Bruce Willis. I gotta say, I kinda like it.
But, seriously. I know exactly where you're coming from. When I first started I was the same way (snuggles knows this well) and I'm pretty confident that over the years I've learned more about what it is to work for (a.k.a. "serve") my clients properly than fufill my own creative needs.
I'd love nothing more than to do whatever the fuck I want whenever the fuck I want but no one will pay me to do that.
So, until I figure out how to accomplish that I work at my job and I'm thankful that I don't work at Sears anymore.
With that said, you should always stand up for what you BELIEVE in. But make damn well sure you can back it up otherwise you'll make more trouble for yourself. Sometimes even if you BELIVE you're absolutely right.
I'm not sure where I once read/heard this but "professional design is 95% shit work and 5% work that isn't so terrible, the other 0% is work that you absolutely love doing."
- pocho0
Hey Peiter...yer in Yorba Linda? We're frickin' neighbors, Homie!
I'm twice your age and can tell you how much shit you have to deal with in the future. Bastard clients...bitch deadlines...redos.
But in the end, we all LOVE what we get paid to do! You will too.

Dude, I feel you. I finished school about a year ago, and have been working in the "industry" for the past 8 months.
You pretty much got it right. It sucks!!! I've already made several posts whining/complaining about having to work, so I won't get into that.
I'll tell you...the first 6 months were killing me. Its a huge adjustment to make from school where I was getting up after 9:00 AM most days, partying until 3:00 AM on weeknights, etc..
Basically, working in the "real world" slowly crushes your soul and breaks down the ideals you used to stand for when you were a kid. Once you just let it go and accept it I guess its not that bad...No...wait...it is...
Sorry...but at least you know that I'm right there with you.
Yeah and sorry to ramble. I'm drunk tonight (first time in like 2 months...major W00t!!) I am a dork and I'm done. Thank you.
