i love how, over the last 12 years, i've seen all these designers rise from obscurity to huge sucess only to vanish into obscurity within 4-5 years, then years later on you see them just hustling on the street trying to re-invent themselves, find that spark, get that next client, trying to catch the next design/technology wave. eventually ending up writing books and doing whatever lectures circuits will pay for them to speak, etc.

I've noticed that whenever Carson's name comes up here on NT people tend to get caught up with the type of person he is.
"He's a drunk"
"He hits on all the chicks"
"He's arrogant"
"He should be more humble" ...
Solid
(Jul 8 05, 19:20)All designers are like that, I dont see the big deal about that... Hell, all guys are like that
- peiter0
solid...
you are correct.
i was under the impression that the "man is the design."
The majority of those that want a more humble version are not speaking because they too think they are good...but more that they have learned the lesson of humility and are ampt to say he carson needs to learn this lesson...because at the end of the day Milton is here...Scher is here...Carson, well...is dead.

I disagree. I had the opportunity to listen to Hillman last year when he came to my school and the singlemost thing that stuck in my head after that lecture was "Man...that guy was REALLY humble!"

i am willing to speak for $5

you're right peiter. the only work i see being boasted by carson's site is his "new" book. pbbbtttt
- peiter0
dood,
carson is the guy we are talking about...not hillman. hillman is the shit.

kevin s
that is true he is very humble and VERY process driven creative who is very inspiring.
i remember one my friend just emailed him asking him if he could just drop by his office and chat cause he was in town. and he said sure why not.
but i think u really get to know a person if you work with them. some desigenrs just project ego (carson) where as others dont project it but there are hint of ego in everyone

i thought hillman was a whacko until i saw him speak about 6 years ago (i think it was 6 years ago).
very very brilliant guy. he didnt have fancy charts or art work to show but he showed just few lines of process. and some art history. i was amazed where as most of the ppl there thought "he sucked, he didnt show anywork"

the complexities of information delivery created the need to collaborate, I think the great design shops and agencies will be know in the future. House, DR, buro, odopod, wwft, so many more... great minds thinking together in groups.

A friend of mine have been emailing back and forth with Carson for years now, She begun after we both had a long chat with him after a lecture he gave in Bremen, Germany. They chat about all kinds of shit, design related and not.. Which I find pretty open and friendly.
Maybe it's because she a girl.

sooo many other collectives.
I saw carsen's work before I knew a thing about design. I remember noting the newest issue of surfer because it changed every month. Some of the covers and feature graphics he did were brilliant. Lot of experimentation but with logical parameters.

I have a ton of his typefaces but clearly they are from a bygone time.
