large agency or small

Company X (small) offered me a design position, which is great. I have a lot of friends there, and they have a lot of fun on the job. My problem is, I have an interview at company Y (large) and have a good shot of getting a position there. Thinking about my career 10 years down the road, working at company Y (large) and having the quality of work they produce will look good in my book and my resumé.
I already turned down company X (small) once. I think they have expressed a lot of interest and time into me, and I know if I turned them down again, they'd be really upset. Arguably, pissed off.
SO, do I go into company Y(large), and try hard to get in with them there? OR go to company X (small) and see what happens?

I'd vote for the small company.

I couldn't tell you which one is better than the other because truely I have no idea..
but what place would you ENJOY working at the most? nothing thinking of your book. I think you should be happy where you work and it would suck working for people you didn't want to work for.

I hope you are not still a designer in 10 yrs time, you soon will realise no matter whom you work for you are just the slave, end of story.
I say go with whom you enjoy and can meet a lot of clients that you can take with you when you eventually establish something of your own.

Company large could be full of new friends. Try to stalk some of the employees after they finish work for the day, you know, check out their lifestyle, see what kind of clothes they hang up on laundry day.

i had EXACTLY the same predicament - I went with the big agency - you can always be mates with the small guys, but a big agency will open doors you could never have - go for size, then go small again if you want - you'll be more employable after you stint at Y, and then you could work at another Y or an X

i would go with the company who did work that i like and would be proud of and enjoy doing myself.

small or large, only matter if you care about the money.
If you have the chance to work with friends, (hopefully sharing similar ideas and thoughts) that is the best thing in the world, at least for me.
It's hard but if you find the right people it can bring you more satisfaction than working on a large agency where the only true merit that you have is being in the chair at the time "they" got that big account.at least for me, other people might thing the complete opposite.

Small.
Possibly given more creative freedom, less bitching than in a bigger company. Yet if you've only worked in small companies, maybe working somewhere larger will do you good?

You should do neither, and then drop out and start a commune with said friends. Then devote all time to making art, music, growing vegtables and raising livestock. You can then use graphic design as a way to sell the art, music, vegtables and livestock, as well as a way to promote your political and spiritual beliefs on the world. And you will be completley self sustaining.

Do what you would enjoy the most... I would like work with friends, because you will probably have the most fun with them..
Ive been working in a large company for a while and its okay, but if I could choose something else it would be for sure a smaller company

just my personal take, but if you are concerned about your "career 10 years down the road", i think you may be in the incorrect line of work. i am not trying to be demaening or dense, but being a creative is just that, and makign a decision about being a creative w/ a time slot in mind is absolutely crazy, IMHO.
the work and your hosesty in what you can contribute to it is really all that matters. the opportunities and "doors opened" will come regardless of which agency you are with, or when these occur. people and groups appreciate and will always be looking for the talent, that is only developed if you are open enough to allow yourself for this to be revealed. if you are worried about if it will happen and at what level it will be at in 10 years, i think you may be more interested in a management position or something. again, not trying to be harsh, and honestly good luck. sounds like the best "problem" a person can have. :)

which one pays more?
Pay x Fun / portfolio work =
Higher # wins

Keep in mind, most large agencies are set up so you work on a limited number of clients per year. Small agencies, you work on everything. Which can be better for building your skills.
Also, what level you enter is something to think about.
Keep in mind, the more hands on the better...
