how do you handle the 'desired salary' question?
too high and they might say, "uh... are ya kidding? we don't have that kind of budget."
too low and you may undervalue or screw yourself.

depends on where you interview

"competitive"

well it's not a bad problem to be a little bit too high. since they will most likely still offer you something a bit less if they do think its a tad high.
- shellie0
shoot inbetween "what you're worth" and "industry standard" for your position.
If you know anyone else who works there that can give you an inside AFTER you come up with your number, that would be helpful.
take your chances and dont screw yourself. unless youre really hurtin to get a job where youre underpaid and unhappy.

if their eyes don't pop open upon hearing what you want?
you started too low.
if they accept your offer right out?
you started too low.
just remember: it's a game.

thanks for the help, folks! best to ya... as always.

When someone asks me what the salary looks like where i work, I always spin the question back on them. ALWAYS. It's a test... what they say a lot about how much balls (or lack of) they have, etc.
If they go TOO high, that really wouldnt change my mind if i was planning on hiring them, anyway. I'd come back at them with something more reasonable and I'd tell them why.
If someone goes way lower than I expected, I makes me wonder "whats wrong here." Or, I wonder if there is any skill there that they really doubt themselves on.
But I always leave them with this advice when they go off to think about what theyre worth:
If you think you're worth it, go for it. But, you better bring it. *throws up jazx hands"

Great advice shellie!
Never sell yourself short. just ask for what you think you are worth - and at the very least it will open up a forum for negotiation...
- shellie0
I don't believe anyone who says they don't know what they're worth.
And this is almost always true: You're only worth what you can get.
If you cant get it there, you better keep lookin.

i had an instructor that gave us an example, she told us to say
" i know you have a range in mind... i wish to be considered at the top of the range"i've used it a couple times. i've gotten laughter. and a "no really, what are your salary requirments". i just said it again.
" i know you have a range in mind... i wish to be considered at the top of the range"
- Gorbie0
that's a good question to an answer they won't give.
- BonSeff0
maybe check that aiga calculator and see if that is in your range. if it is, print it out and slide it across the table

Consider asking for what the employee package is first as well. What’s the insurance like? HMO? PPO? Blue cross? Some other wack insurance company? Generic or brand Rx? Profit sharing? 401k? Life Insurance Benefits? Standard vacation time? Company holidays? Get them to break down the details. They'll think you care about the big picture, not just how many dollars.
And if it's shitty, you can make an educated adjustment to your salary requirements, and you will be able to tell them why, or have an argument if they continue to try and get you down again.
"I'm really used to the PPO care that I have now and I wish to continue with what I have now as an employee of your company, which will cost more for me out of pocket a year. It will cost me ___ much."
"I'm always looking toward the future. I need to make sure that I continue to save___ an IRA in lieu of not having 401k and an investment matching plan."
The list goes on.
You really cant argue that stuff and they are very valid expenses to an employer.
You don't have to have your responses ready on teh spot. But, any documentation you can get them to give you on what you would be getting would be helpful, and you can just respond by email and follow up with a call to explain and go over it. I would be so impressed if someone did that.
- jpowell0
good points shelly. thats a great way to deflect the question a bit too.
so is jevard... a retarded jevad or what? whats going on.
- Gorbie0
i prefer to keep it simple and low ball myself. it's quick and easy, and by now i'm used to fucking up a good thing.
- shellie0
