i prefer to keep it simple and low ball myself. it's quick and easy, and by now i'm used to fucking up a good thing.

Consider asking for what the employee package is first as well. What’s the insurance like? HMO? PPO? Blue cross? Some other wack insurance company? Generic or brand Rx? Profit sharing? 401k? Life Insurance Benefits? Standard vacation time? Company holidays? Get them to break down the details. They'll think you care about the big picture, not just how many dollars.
And if it's shitty, you can make an educated adjustment to your salary requirements, and you will be able to tell them why, or have an argument if they continue to try and get you down again.
"I'm really used to the PPO care that I have now and I wish to continue with what I have now as an employee of your company, which will cost more for me out of pocket a year. It will cost me ___ much."
"I'm always looking toward the future. I need to make sure that I continue to save___ an IRA in lieu of not having 401k and an investment matching plan."
The list goes on.
You really cant argue that stuff and they are very valid expenses to an employer.
You don't have to have your responses ready on teh spot. But, any documentation you can get them to give you on what you would be getting would be helpful, and you can just respond by email and follow up with a call to explain and go over it. I would be so impressed if someone did that.

maybe check that aiga calculator and see if that is in your range. if it is, print it out and slide it across the table
- Gorbie0
that's a good question to an answer they won't give.
- jpowell0
i had an instructor that gave us an example, she told us to say
" i know you have a range in mind... i wish to be considered at the top of the range"i've used it a couple times. i've gotten laughter. and a "no really, what are your salary requirments". i just said it again.
" i know you have a range in mind... i wish to be considered at the top of the range"

I don't believe anyone who says they don't know what they're worth.
And this is almost always true: You're only worth what you can get.
If you cant get it there, you better keep lookin.

Great advice shellie!
Never sell yourself short. just ask for what you think you are worth - and at the very least it will open up a forum for negotiation...
- blaw0
thanks, shellie. that is exactly what i needed. i appreciate the help.
