When someone asks me what the salary looks like where i work, I always spin the question back on them. ALWAYS. It's a test... what they say a lot about how much balls (or lack of) they have, etc.
If they go TOO high, that really wouldnt change my mind if i was planning on hiring them, anyway. I'd come back at them with something more reasonable and I'd tell them why.
If someone goes way lower than I expected, I makes me wonder "whats wrong here." Or, I wonder if there is any skill there that they really doubt themselves on.
But I always leave them with this advice when they go off to think about what theyre worth:
If you think you're worth it, go for it. But, you better bring it. *throws up jazx hands"
