CPU Fan going insane

Hey guys, I have an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ and today, specifically today, the fan is insanely loud, when I check speedfan it is telling me the fan is running at 5800RPM . Maybe this is related to the hot weather we're experiencing in the UK at the moment? (38 degrees celcius). I don't know if it is wise to keep my computer running when it is straining this much to keep the CPU cool?
Help please!

might have something to do with the hot weather.. i suggest trying to keep it cool by putting it in the shade or buying some extra fans. i think pc world do some cheap clip on's

I have a spare case fan, where should I install it? I have the whole side of the case off, the ceiling fan on, the window open and its still mad

i am by no means a expert, but try pointing as close to the processor as possible. my fan went crazy, got very loud a while ago and then the PSU blow up, so it might be that, also turn you PC off and trying cleaning all fans they can get clogged up with dust. also back up your hard drive to be safe.

This is a relatively new rig, no dust anywhere, Ii have no means of backing up (risky I know!)

If you have a pc where you can remove the side of the case, use a big household fan and direct it in the opening.

Meok, hm thanks, it just went down from 5800RPM to 4400RPM, still a little high but I suppose that's understandable considering today!

can't believe no one said "buy a mac" yet.

maybe because powerbooks burn holes in peoples laps

I wouldn't worry too too much, most new motherboards will increase the power to the fan if the temp increases. If the cpu die's temp is 45 you should be ok, in gernal AMD's stock heatsink/fan combos are not that great so they tend to run a little high anyways.
I have seen AMD chips run from 54-57 degrees without beeing damaged (although if you get above 50 id start to get concerned)
If you are really worried, I am not sure wha your setup is like but you could underclock it and lower the vcore and that would most likely reduce the temperature.

I think the advice to clean the fan was the best idea! The comp I am on at the moment is an AMD and its running @ 68 degrees C, and the fan is only running @ 3000rpm. All modern processors have built in thermal protection at around 90-95 deg C, so I wouldn't worry.
It's just having to work hard cos of the weather. And don't take the side off, that just voids the design of the case and prevents air from flowing properly through the case. In my machine i have a casefan front and back and one on the side, to encourage good airflow over the vital components.
Keeping the fans relatively dust free is the only thing to worry about!

Hmm didn't see the "no dust" comment. If its just a loud hum, the fan is doing its job.
If its cracking and banging intermittently then the fan probably needs replacing or just check that the fan is still locked onto the motor shaft by means of a circlip.

Give your box a good hit. It could just need to be jarred back into place. If it is still noisy, the bearing could be shot... yes even though it is new. replace or you will have problems soon.

Replacing AMD's stock heatsink isn't a bad idea either.

buy a mac
