I think this is a great move by Apple.

too bad there aren't 50 other threads on this or you might hear it from the crowd.... lucky you...

It allows Apple to take advantage of economies of scale that Intel provides in the CPU space.
It also allows software developers to optimize for one hardware platform.
I hope Apple makes the final move of licencing their OS to the likes of HP, Dell, etc.

I would dig. This + dualboot with PC = games and graphics. Much loving to proceed.

i'll never buy a computer again unless it's the size of a cigarette lighter and can light cigarettes while rendering a full length video in under 5 seconds.

this is good and bad.
it's bad because you'll see more pc software ported to the mac which means a less stable OS which means more security holes which means BSOD, whic means WTF, which means OMG! which means PC=ROTFLMAO.

blue screen of death, maybe in win98.

this is good for apple users, unless they totally screw up the rewrites of the OS

maybe you guys will be able to install 3rd party video cards and shit soon.

sigh.

WRONG!!
Apple has been running OS X on pentium machine for the last five years. And during the demo this morning Steve Jobs was running a 3.4 Ghz Pentium 4!!!
As much as it doesn't sound right, I think this is a very good move by Apple!

wow. so everybody here thinks that only excisting intel chips will be used? another thing it's the entire structure of a machine not just the one cpu that determines it, so ported pc sofware? (could already have been done). but anyways, why wouldn't intel / apple continue the powerpc / risc architecture?

also macs will stop being slow as frozen dogshit

Considering Apple's roadmap for a 2006 launch of Intel CPU-based Macs, I don't think Intel will have a 'new' processor for Apple.
Also, I think having Intel design a new or customized processor for Apple would erase the cost/scale benefits of going with Intel in the first place ..

I think that Intel might make 'mac specific' chips and chipsets.... maybe... it would be a good idea because it would set mac aside from the 'generic' pentium PC's

I'm wondering if their aim is to become the main UNIX build over the next few years... It wouldn't surprise me...
- a-train0
unless intel has been planning for this moment for some years, it probably wont happen

here we go. soon there will be a MacHead uproar over using Intel.
- yarsrevenge0
Who cares really... macs suck and lock up and crash and all that crap anyways... use a pc. it looks good on you.
