Sounds like a dual provides significant increase so I would be better off going with dual 500s rather than a single 800(or so)?

Solid - right now I am running a wintel box 2.8 ht with a gig of ram and 200 gigs of drive space. I would still keep this computer too but i would love to have an apple for bitechnicality, browser testing, and am interested in seeing how tiger runs and finding out what working on an apple would be like.

if you aren't doing print work, you can get away with a single g4, probably nothing slower than 733. get as much ram as the computer will hold and tiger will run fine.

Cragslist is great.
EBay is okay.
But yes, you're right - I mean use ebay watches to get a sense of what the market is like for dual-proc G4s [which seems like a perfect machine for your purposes, definitely go dual and max out the RAM] and then either buy on ebay from a REPUTABLE seller or check cragslist, or the paper.
I do agree with whomever said its better to see the seller of a used machine's face. that being said, I bought a new sony laptop on ebay last week and got one new in box for -600 retail, slightly under the ebay market, which has already gone up a couple hundred bucks. seems if I want one, so do a million other wackos.

you can also buy refurbished computer at apple's site. if there's any problems, you can return them. i got my pb from there. saved some $$.
