I used to be drawing back in '89 pixelgraphics on the 8-bit C64.
Pixel for pixel. But with the introduction of photoshop etc, everything is different...Anyone is a former c64 user or anyone knows how to draw in highres a pixel for pixel drawing in photoshop without getting soft edges?
thanks.

sure, use the pencil r block tool/brush.

work in very a low res.
- randoman0
res will be dependant on how big u want the thing to be right?

good thing of c64 was, there was only 1 res. :) but I was thinking of vectorizing the pixels to make it scalable...

I would suggest against using vectors to make pixel art.
If you want to blow up your work, just do so without aliasing it. ie. the blocks will get bigger wile remaining sharp.
The work will appear bigger but more pixelated. But after all thats the point right?

Work at very small res, then convert to indexed and scale up you wont loose the pixle look.

thanks for the good tip!

scale the artwork in photoshop using 'nearest neighboor', instead of 'bi-cubic'.

yep work 1:1 plus what clerk says but make sure you resize in equal steps or else you will get odd aliasing. for instance if you work in 75 dpi you can resize to 150, 300, 600 etc. by using nearest neighbour without losing quality / no aliasing. if you work in 72 dpi, copy the copy document and paste it in a 75 dpi document (or else you have to calculate 2 * 72, 3 * 72 etc.)

good and smart thinking here by clerk & rabattski +1
thx alot.

what kappa said!

Use a grid in illustrator, for example 640x480.
Then do a lot of squares and rectangles.
So it will be scalable
Have fun!

do it on a msall scale and then zoom in on it to work how big you actually want it... then you'll know what scale to scale up to

'Real' c64 gfx with a pc program. Other i can suggest is Promotion (http://www.cosmigo.com/promotio... or gfx2 (http://gfxzone.planet-d.net/art...
Ofocurse you can fake it in photoshop, using indexed colours does the trick aswell.

i've did a pixel illustration in illustrator once, with snap to grid etc. and i seriously wouldn't advise it. a) too much work b) exporting it to a jpeg for instance will alias it and c) you have to check every square because illy once in a while has the need to put something on for instance y:9,999px and x:9,999px instead of 10 / 10, which leaves tiny gaps. photoshop is the way to go and you can make it as big as you want anyways without losing quality.
