hello all...i am googling in vain and would like know if anyone has experience with a printer / binder for a short run of books
the project is for a hair stylist so i'm thinking it will have to be full color / bleed / glossy throughout (yes i know short run this will mean lots of dollars)...the idea is to make a bunch of copies to shop around to publishers to try to get picked up...
in addition to any printer info does anyone have any advice?...i am in the beginning stages right now...my client isn't sure of her budget so i want to know what to tell her is possible or not...
im just starting to break out of interactive design so whatever help you can offer i appreciate

how many pages?

15 pages of text (word 8.5 x 11 prolly double-spaced and comic sans) and 70 photos...im ballparking 30 - 40...oh she also wants a custom size (14x14) which makes for more dollars

hm.
i'm not a print dude to ask but i know something about sales. and it will probably be easier to pitch a publisher with a non-finsished looking book.
40 pages at 14 (inches?) by 14 can be made to look handsome with a bit of DIY spirit. it would also be easier on a limited budget.
maybe you have or somebody knows, but it's worth asking a publisher how best to pitch them ideas... you know?

that's an excellent idea...i do have some experience hand binding books but i'm afraid to fuck up high quality prints...it's probably worth it to figure out how to pitch before spending any money on production

i'm sure, you'll have an easy time finding the right info too. just make some phone calls to publisher's in your area code and riddle them with lots of questions. post the results too. i'm curious. :)

Maybe u could just put together a pdf version and send it to publishers on CD or via email till it gets picked up.
Your going to pay tons for a short run that looks nice enough not to ruin the content. For your needs it doesn't make sense to print it first.
If anything print up a small press kit type folder with nice material, and add a CD with the ebook version that u propose they print.

i will...i've just emailed a former professor of mine who is working on a book...
anyone have print advice for somewhat of a n00b to the print world at this scale?

randoman...great idea...i guess the fear is does the press kit garner enough interest for the publisher to put in the cd and page through...haha, i guess that just means i need to do my job well...that definitely sounds like the better option right now though

(May 17 05, 16:44)Think of the presskit as the book sleve. Make it intresting and thoughtful enough and people will take the time to check out the ebook on the CD. Publishers are used to sending and recieving material in digital form (ie. pdf, quark, Indesign.) it won't be anything new or confusing to them.
