I hate them. I'm doing a presentation and they want a flash intro. I usually make them short and sweet. But my Art Director wants to out do the last intro I made and he thinks a way to do that is by making the intro I've already made longer. I feel that most people just skip the intros and go right to the info or are not expecting to sit through anything longer than 20 seconds. They wanna get to the point! The intro I've made is ready and all cued up! I don't want to go back and mess it up by just adding BS. Am I wrong? Should I stop being lazy and rework my intro? Or should I explain to my inept Art Director the intro does not have to be a mintue long?

you can try to explain it to your ad. if he still wants it, why not. he's the boss right?

Yeah that is what I generlly do. However this is messaging BS. Maybe that is why I hate it. Cuz it's just BS.

What's the point of having a intro anywys?
The guy is already there!!!Don't waste his time on loading useless moving nonsense... unless the intro actually helps him in some way related with what he is about to find!
If people don't skip the intro if because they couldn't find the button, because 20 seconds is a life.
Have a long intro and people will hate you immediatly because you are making him waste his precious time, or will die of boredom even before reaching to the content.
But maybe your art director needs to show off himself with the client, and no explanation would work in that case.

I was at a seminar this morning about content management and SEO and there was a 50s-ish guy who kept trying to act like he was really saavy with the web and just kept saying buzz-words from 5 years ago.
I heard him start to say "Well, we have a flash site," and he got cut off, but I KNEW he would find a way to tell everyone they have a flash site. And he did.
And when one of the speakers told everyone how Flash isn't searchable, you could tell this guy had no idea what she was talking about.

If an intro is a must, then make sure it serves a purpose. If people are visiting the site for the first time, the intro should give them a good idea if they want to be there in 10 seconds or less. Think of it as a trailer for the site. Do you want to do a quick teaser with the logo and a one liner? Or do you want to do a few bullets of what the site has to offer? I think sometimes, as designers we tend to immediately write off intros as cliche and click through them. However, if done well, I can still apreciate the effort. But just in case, make the skip intro enticing to click on as well.

It all depends on how the intro is done, and how well is comunicating the message.
For example:
http://www.propellerheads.se/dsp…It takes a long time to load, and its more than 20 seconds long, but incredibly dynamic it explains all the important upgrades of the application.
If the intro is a 20 seconds animated: "Welcome to my site, please click the arrow to enter"
then yes, it is a waste of time..
