If an intro is a must, then make sure it serves a purpose. If people are visiting the site for the first time, the intro should give them a good idea if they want to be there in 10 seconds or less. Think of it as a trailer for the site. Do you want to do a quick teaser with the logo and a one liner? Or do you want to do a few bullets of what the site has to offer? I think sometimes, as designers we tend to immediately write off intros as cliche and click through them. However, if done well, I can still apreciate the effort. But just in case, make the skip intro enticing to click on as well.
