Don't put your iPod through the washing machine. And if for some reason you do, don't try to fix it with a screwdriver.
That's the advice of fire investigators probing a small explosion that burned a hole in the bed of a Melbourne teenager who tried to perform emergency surgery on his ailing mp3 player.
The boy was treated by paramedics at his Bayswater home for breathing difficulties after ingesting fumes emitted by the device as he pulled it apart in his suburban bedroom about 7.30pm on Wednesday.
Country Fire Authority spokesman Peter Philp said the leaky iPod had been taken away for testing by CFA investigators.
"His mother did the washing and the iPod was in the clothing so it went through the washing machine," Mr Philp said.
"It wasn't working, the young fella tried to undo it or fix it with a screwdriver and at that stage there was an explosion, or more of a pop.
"It was more smoke than fire but it did leave a burn mark on the cover."
Metropolitan Ambulance spokeswoman Lirije Memishi said it was unclear what the teenager had ingested.
"We treated him on the scene for minor breathing difficulties but he was fine and then we scooted out and helped save the rest of Melbourne," she said.

got news for you, B. Gates, no matter how much you want to hate him, richest man in the world, as in most money.
Love Apple all you want, that's called 'leverage'.

Australlia must be a great place to live if this is the type of stuff that makes the news.

mircosoft have alot of power and money to launch a new product, but they and everybody else don't have what Apple got, the iPod. everybody knows what it is, and everybody wants one.. even my mom got herself one last year!! the majority of the worlds population are not nerds like some peeps in here, they just want a music player to be simple to use, update etc. and why would you want a mp3 player to start ringing when you enjoy mozart or SoaD?
fuck the multi gagdets, keep the shit simple and useful like apple and you will rule the world in the end

If that kid tried something like that over here, that IPOD would have taken out half his neihborhood.

i was introduced to some family friends, and one of the little girls [about 10?] didn't say hello to me. what she said to start the introduction was "do you have an ipod?"
that's saying something...

phones are only good for a couple months before they look big and outdated
why pay ipod money on something that's gonna be outdated in a few months?
- ********0
maybe the magic of the ipod will make people keep their phones longer?
- ********0
there will never be a iPhone or whatever they call em, Motorola is gonna make the phones like always and Apple the iTunes player for it. The iPod will remind iPod for a long time still, maybe a iPod Video will come next, but not before the iMovie Store is in place and ready to sell movies
Apple always wait till they have a complety developed quality product, even if it have to take a year or two longer that everybody else, but they still sell 300% more than the others.. look at the Shuffle for instance.
- scarabin0
maybe they can add add more features, slash the price, and call it a psp
- ********0
All the shuffle proves is that Apples influence, marketing muscle, and grip on popular culture is more powerful than the product itself. "Life is random, and your music should be too" is less of a catch phrase and more of an excuse to sell a crippled device. Pure marketing genius.
I'll give it to them though, product design is tight, ergonomics are tight, and interface as well. With the exception of the hideous candy imac and smurf berry pocket(i)books, apple products can last for years without looking dated.

PSP = great gadget but not very pocketable. And not everyone likes to carry around messenger bags, backpacks, or the forbidden fanny packs and thier offspawns.
- scarabin0
that's why you put it in the front of your undies where it can also accent your manbulge and protect your "area" from random flying debris

I'll stick with the Incuburger over the Ipod anyway, I was just trying to make a point.
