or atleast it is according to bill gates;

for me, it's easy to imagine him making these statements from the bottom of a deep well, where he has only his fanciful imagination to keep him company.
I guess no one told him about the cellphone/iPod that apple and motorola are working on.

how large is this cellphone/iPod supposed to be? and it better not be too complicated...

dunno about that...itunes is coming to moto phones june...anyway

I've never bought that argument and I won't now either.
The ability to stream music or download songs - I can't imagine how that will surpass the ability to hook an mp3 player to your computer and manipulate a large number of albums and songs, GB's worth to a large storage device.
Phones with mp3 storage capability will work great for people unlike most of us who want large capacity and the features an iPod offers.
My phone is for talking.

I think it's good to consolidate all of these little devices into one... it means less junk rolling around in your pockets. Storage shouldent be so muc of an issue at the rate larger and smaller drives are rolling out. Biggest concern would be battery life. It would be nice to see manufacturers throw in a little aaa compartment in the event someone depleats the batteries and needs a few more hours before reaching a power outlet.
If you could take the rough dimensions of a mini and change up the form factor to be a little more phone friendly - in addition, modify the earbuds so that they can work as a headset to recieve and transmit voice - the thing would be really great imo. Why carry both an mp3 player and phone when one device could merge the two so well? The ipod wheel navigation would also work great for phone functions.
Or that new motarola phone that flips open to a keyboard and screen - put a decent size drive and itunes on that.

I agree with random
eventually the best will have to be a phone that does every thing..
lets not forget that celphones has 1000 times more users than people to listent to mp3 players, so there is a bigger market for that..
I believe that there is also a lot of branding, I doubt that windows come com up with that will know whatever phone/ipod version that apple is working on.
Im not saying that the windows version can't be better, it probably will, but there is a lot of mp3 players better, and cheaper than the ipod, but the marketing is focused more on design, than usability. So if apple follows a similar strategy with the branding of the ipod/phone, the microsoft one, will be just one more from the bunch..
Or maybe not?

Im serious, the psp is the coolest piece of consumer electronics ever. I was playing bittorrent videos on that bitch last week.

i heard in 4 years, you can urinate into a cell phone and it turns into cologne called piss mist

i'm happy with hauling around my cell phone and ipod. i actually don't want them to be the same device.
eventually...i will OWN psp...

Hmm..I think it could be a good idea but it's definitely going to be complicated for users unless there is some easy way to switch back and forth between functions (ie. phone, music, camera). I'm not sure if I'd buy it, but many people would - as long as it's smart in terms of design and especially function.

Microsoft is about to release new devices running on CE 5 and using 3G networks for voice and data... this is when you will start to see the Ipod killers coming out. this is most likely reffering to what Gates was talking about. The specs, design and ability of these devices make the IPOD look like a musical bar of soap.
One thing that puts Apple in dangerous waters is the fact they don't have a mobile OS. Embedded Linux, Palm and Microsoft will be the ones competing for fully functioning pocket phone/devices. Soon Apple will find itself with a nicely designed, fully redundant piece of equiptment ... it's true.
Unless they have a pocket version of OSX they are hiding away somewhere.

I would like to carry around one of these to play my 2600 games and 8-tracks. mp3 is overrated.
