yeah i second the ufo. can't be anything else.

Let me clarify that... the plane seemed to be traveling directly away from the sun in relation to where I was standing...
- CaP0
if the sun was behind the plane, and behind you, then it could be the shadow of the plane's trail projected over a thin layer of clouds/smog over you...
the plane must have been flying very high, tho
- mattyd0
maybe the plane was travelling up further into the atmopshere and the black line could be the jet burning through that particular part of the atmopshere or vice versa.

you are not alone:

Here is a web cam of the construction site I was at when I took the photos. You can actually see the same part of the sky where I saw the UFO...errr...plane...
UFO's - 20
Rainbows - 3
Lens defect- 3
Poop - 1I think I am going to go with the poop theory...
Thanks all for helping me "crack" this case.

that dark line is the future.
gruntt
(May 2 05, 08:55)exactly.
what you witnessed there was the future, and it was dull as fuck.
- zoiks0
Marvelous tny!
grazi!

How can a shadow be projected through the atmosphere?
zoiks
(May 2 05, 09:18)it can. i've heard/seen about it before. it's got something to do with dust/fog/smog or whatever..
but i wonder if there's any at that height..
- rabattski0
ok, so it's a shadow of a chemical trail which is a government attempt of spreading chemicals by using commercial jets? wow, i love conspiracy theories but this one's new to me and it already rawks hard.
- tny0
roger that
- vburo0
i just studied the pic tny posted, and it's definatly some sort of shadow.
nothing too mysterious anyways.
:)
- rabattski0
sounds way cooler than ufos, so i second the black ray, a shadow of a chem trail.
- ribit0
the shadow is of the contrail, cast onto low-lying mist.
- zoiks0
a guy at Rockwell Collins ( http://www.rockwellcollins.com/ ) emailed this back to me.
"It's not the shadow that gets reflected off of something, it is sunlight not reaching something that it would normally reach that causes a shadow. In this case, sunlight normally reflects off of water particles in the air (poor man's reason why the sky is blue). The contrail blocks the light from the sun that would normally fall on these water particles in the air and a shadow is seen. "
