stop, back up, get Cable router.

get a 4 port router - that way you'll have a secure firewall

thanks a bunch guys..
does that mean i dont need to buy a new modem? can connect both pc and mac to the internet at same time?
- sparker0
modems only provide the wan link from your isp. you need a router in place for a lan.
dsl modem -> router -> nodes
and, depending on how many boxes you have...you may need a switch in there somewhere.
routers provide basic infrastructure requirements. dhcp server, firewall, nat, dmz, etc.
soho routers, like dlink usually have switches/hubs built into them...like a 4-port cable/dsl router.
4 lan ports, 1 wan port and sometimes wireless.
pretty easy to set up. they all have embedded webservers and web based gui config panels.

yes. you may plug your osx, windows and unix/linux boxes into a router and all can interact with eachother and the internet.

ah i get it now, that simple?
many thanks for your help ;)

just be careful to NOT get a HUB, they operate differently from routers or switches, and are much slower.

also, be carefull NOT to get a toaster. they have no built in firewall and do not come with any ports installed. wtf?
- de4k0
yeah and please DONT get a pie, they offer sustenance but very little connectivity.

i had a linksys 4 port router between my mac and PC. worked like a charm -- until lightning struck and fried the router (can't get power to it now). I am now looking into wireless routers for a new in-home network
- sparker0
you can too network a toaster.

and the pie?

You could just use Internet Sharing from the Mac to the PC, with just a modem connected to the Mac.... but its sort of a crappy way to do it...get a router/basestation and make a proper netwrok.

the gheyness of that toaster pc cannot be overstated.
