    modems only provide the wan link from your isp. you need a router in place for a lan.

    dsl modem -> router -> nodes

    and, depending on how many boxes you have...you may need a switch in there somewhere.

    routers provide basic infrastructure requirements. dhcp server, firewall, nat, dmz, etc.

    soho routers, like dlink usually have switches/hubs built into them...like a 4-port cable/dsl router.

    4 lan ports, 1 wan port and sometimes wireless.

    pretty easy to set up. they all have embedded webservers and web based gui config panels.
