I have never aquire a taste for the fire water (ie. most things with alchohol) due to my conservative upbringing. I want to be able to enjoy wine as I get older. I am going to by my first bottle tonight...
What should I get? Remember, I am use to "Kool-aid" type of drinks, like sodas etc. & I don't want to pay alot for this muffler...err bottle of wine.

two oceans makes a really good white wine from south africa, and it's cheap!
yellow label is amazingly good wine, but it's expensive!

I really like Austrailian reds especially their merlots or shiraz.
look for Yellow Tail Vinyards

yech. Drink red, not a fan of white.
Then again if you like the sweet and fruity you should start white I guess...

Wild Irish Rose is quality stuff, same with Mad Dog.

Try some California reds. Skip merlots...if you don't like them at first...I recommend drinking off a naked woman's chest or her belly button. That helps.

not sure if this helps but i grew up drinking beer and sake (lighter booze than most) so starting with chardonnay kind of helped me get assimilated. it's light, full of flavor, and quite enjoyable.
but if you're up for it, go for fine cab or merlot.
if you like something sweet, i also suggest port. similar enough to the consistency of wine but sweet.

if you're gonna go for california wine, i must recommend some from sonoma county since i lived in the town of sonoma for a year or so.
try:
sebastinani
ravenwoods
anything from viansa winery (viansa has kept italian influence and tastes quite unlike most wine from sonoma county).

Start off with fruity wines, 'cos they're easier on the palate - New world vintners tend to be a good bet (in the UK we've got consumer brands such as Julio Gallo and and Rosemount) or try a good ol' beaujolais - perfect for warm spring nights!
God I sound like a twat.

hmmm did not even know Australia had it's own wine.
*hangs head in shame

gonna try it next time though.
btw. you either love it or hate it. i have been a red wine addict since when i was a teenager. all my mates were on beer and i just abused one bottle of wine after the other..

wolfblass yes, rosemount yes, julio gallo no, jacobs creek no.
rioja yes.
you could train yourself into it with some cava (its fizzy and gives a nice buzz, beggars champagne), then get into white while its spring/summer, dry reisling, semillon sauvignon, sauvignon blanc kinda thing, then get into some reds around autumn time, merlot or a nice shiraz with some spicy food.

basic wine 101...
buy a normal size bottle, with a cork, that costs at least $8.
red: cabernet sauvignon, merlot, valpolicella
white: chardonnay, reisling

for a fruity white you may want to go with a pinot. chilled.
a shiraz for a chilled red.
cabernet is good but it's warm, not sure you'd dig it. merlot goes well with steak.

don't listen to these guys!
if you really want some SERIOUS wine, try some Portuguese red wine. Setubal or Sado wines are really unique in all the known universe. Nothing like it. Australians are trying to rip it with no luck. The British say that our countries are friends only because of it. We had to quick the french out also because of it... Don't get fooled man, PT wine is behind europe's geopolitical eventes since the DAWN of man. Really.
hehe,
:P
