MASS ART is a state school and it is one of the top design schools in the country.
I got my undergrad from a state school too. They had a great art department... You have to go in and do your research.
I got my first job as I was graduating a Community College with my Associates... It's all about what you do with it.
But i agree with the notion that you should NOT go to a "tech" school i.e. Gibbs, Art Institue INternational... anything that changes its name every 2 months...
They suck!

Plus Arizona State's art school is one of the best in the nation, I find that many places like "collins college" are just degree mills, handing one out to whoever will pay their stupid tution.

Arizona State isn't really shitty, I know many people see it as a party school, but if you really look its one of the better public institutions.

practise at your own time, buy couple of copic markers,, pencils, fineliners, and some paint set and a good 300page sketch book. this will improve your skills immensely, just dont rip out the ones you dont like, leave it in. later go aback to it and improve it =D

I went to Brown Institute in Minneosta. A weak program. I recommend doing research on design schools if you really want to get something out of your education and money!

When I was halfway through my history major I 'found' design and the Internets. At that time there were no 'new media' classes. I read as many books as I could on graphic design and spent many a late night dissecting the popular websites of the time and hacking my way through notepad.
When the first 'interactive designing' course opened at my Uni, I knew more that the teacher did...

what was cool was they didnt teach you the programs either, they just taught you what you needed to know in typography, GD, et al. i learned a lot, it just doesnt translate well because the projects we did werent geared towards the 'real world' in terms of design. we just learned good, solid design and typography. which, in the long run, i think will benefit me grately.
a distinguished alum of NU's GD program would be patrick sundqvist of supershapes...
his site screams my Tom Starr, my typography teacher. whenever i look at his site i am reminded of my Type 1 & 2 classes.

i graduated from northeastern university with a degree in 'media arts and design' which was a hybrid of graphic design/animation/information architecture.
and it has gotten me nowhere...

My school teaches very little of the software side of deisgn. Our program is straight outta Basel. I couldn't be happier with it. I'm not paying to go to school to learn how to use Photoshop.

taragee, why? I think that's pretty damn interesting. And you're doing well enough without totally focusing on artsy fartsy stuff :p
- tehgee0
i shouldnt have listened to my mom and gone to study sociology

no, it wans't.
graphic design and art in general wise, any art school is going to be wayyy better than any state school.
and non of those tech school places either.

Hope that wasn't directed at me, Fresno. Kelley School of Business is ranked 3rd in the country.

you get better by not going to a shitty state school.

I went to SDSU and we had a design-focused program. it wasnt great, but of the people I know that went to schools that were more tech-focused, most of them really just don't get the whole design side of it.
My advice would be to do the design-side of it. If you like it, you'll spend a lot of time working on your stuff and will learn all of the techy stuff on your own.
Very few people are great designers without schooling at design. Look at all the good ones, and try and find one that has a technology background. All it is is a tool for your design.
Damn, Im starting to sound like my old professors.

Ya fullsail is just mainly software and industry training there is one course on design...which is pretty cool, but basic, since im a designer (creative) alot of people didnt consider them selves as creatives....
i would say so much of the people hated that little design course.. i wish it was better
Ya , so basicallly you learn software techniques and industry information.
Its what you make of it, i made the most!
I would like to take course of some sort...no idea what

That's what I heard!
