I also learned french at school.. but I'm pretty much better in castellano (general spain and latin-american)
although forlatin people (french/i talian/ spanish/ portuguese Its much easier to learn a different latin language than other.. I'd go for french as its more similar as english

The native language in Barcelona is Catalan - much different from the common spanish. but whateva - people there speak the basic spanish as well

Like previously mentioned it's probably best to select one for your future plans. Also, it might be best to choose one that's abundant in your area.
For instance, here we have several Spanish television stations. Watching the nightly news or a football game (something where the text or speech corresponds with the video) is a great way to learn... or at least supplement the doldrums of a classroom or textbook.

Spanish...then you can be sure you are not eating brains in your tacos when you road trip to Baja.

ok, Let me answer your question again.
1. dont tell us what to do or how to respond to threads. This is the place where we can say freely what we think or what we feel best fits your question.
2. If you are just going to learn another language for fun, dont waste your time. there is enough spanish/french designers out there. I would suggest wasting your energy on something productive and that will be more beneficiary for you and others.
3. I think this descision has to come up from where you want to move. If you are moving to france learn french, if you are moving to spain/mexico learn spanish, it is easy as that.
4. if you have friends that speak french, learn french and viceversa. Why learn spanish when your friends only speak french? Yeah, you will look cool when you say "Donde esta el BaƱo?" But that is as far as you will get because you wont have anyone to practice with.
5. as any other language practice is the key. I know people that have been in Spanish classes for 3 years and dont know how to carry a conversation. why? because they dont have anyone to practice with, as simple as that.
My first language is spanish. Born and raised in Mexico City so you know dawg-right I know my language, but since I have a chance to practice my english, it is easier to learn it. I am not perfect to english I know specially in my grammar, but who cares!? as long as I get to practice it it is easier to get a grasp of it
Practice is the key.
oh, one more thing...
dont tell me how to answer on the threads. this only encourages us to post more meaningless comments (at least me).
When I saw the title of this thread I was like COOL! but once I saw your comments of how you wanted the tread to be answered, it just killed it.

learn both ...
anyway these are very similar languages.
french natives are easier to understand than spanish natives though.

as posted 1000 times before, man, you fave to know first what you want to do with the language (learning spanish/french shouldn't be your final aim, it should be your mean to get to it!).
so... what d'you wanna do with it? where d'you wanna live?
as is...

Obviously, they were both Colonial Powers, so think about it. It fucking depends where the hell you want to go and what you want to do. French all over Africa and some parts of the South Pacific and Canada. Spanish all over South and Central America.
Depends on what you want to do with your life.

catalans speak far more than "basic" spanish, but it's true (wouldn't you say, cap?) that to work in a decent design firm in bcn, you'd need english, spanish, french AND catalan. that's just bcn for you, tho.

when in Barcelon, they understood my Spanish, yet not the other way around. kodap is exactly right
