Looks like I am screwed.

Dunno about cosmo, but deanstag is on a VPS with root privs.

Thats true and I am trying to access the server via Terminal on a mac to SSH, but it is rejecting the password MT said they had set for me

Thanks for your help so far, solid and sparker

It took me a while to get my head around Linux (coming from Windows), then I had to learn all about setting up firewalls, general server security, writing shell scripts, managing mail/dns servers, etc. etc.
Unless you have a real need for root privileges on your own server, I would reconsider and spend your time designing rather than admining ..

just download the current source release from http://www.imagemagick.org and install it on the box.
this is all you have to do as root,
$ gunzip -c file.tar.gz
$ tar -xvf file.tar
$ cd newdir
$ ./configure
$ make

Aside from the headache that is installing extensions (this and darwin streaming server), the rest seems pretty manageable with Plesk (emails and such).
- sparker0
oops. forgot one,
$ make install
watch as it streams buy through the compiler stdout.
yea.
run a test or two...
$ convert --version
- deanstag0
solid what do you think? should I really reconsider and move back down to a shared server. spending more time designing sounds fucking great right now
- deanstag0
am i going to have to do this sort of thing often?
- sparker0
what sort of thing? installing modules and programs?
depends on how much is already on your box and what you plan on doing.
are you now a server admin? or are you just trying to install a few things to get something working?
- Solid0
That really depends on why you decided to get a VPS.
For starters, I didn't have a control panel like Plesk, so I had to learn to do everything manually.
In your case, you may be able to get away with installing/updating a package every once-in-a-blue-moon, since most of the important updates will come from SW-Soft (makers of Plesk).

just a few things to get going

ppffssshh. plesk. the command line is the only way to manage a linux box.
:)

If you really need the features of a VPS then I guess you have no choice - but really for the money MT charges (which is a lot more than most VPS providers IIRC) they should at least help you out - bastards!
- deanstag0
Totally starting to feel that way. I am using the vps to host multiple sites for myself and for clients.

-------------Yea, once you learn to do things from cl it's hard to go back to a CP - feels very restrictive ;)

i hate to speak ill towards the likes of some on this forum...but i've heard this about mt a lot.
this is why i'll only use dedicated boxes or just implement my own servers. co-loc's, vps's, shared boxes....they only cause issues for users.
- cosmo0
is there a way u can confirm if imagemagick is installed?
- Solid0
deanstag - if you want/need VPS' capabilities, you might want to shop around - there are cheaper providers who will also provide you with more support eg. installing basic packages etc.
