So I just switched to a more advanced hosting setup! But I now have to install Image::Magick myself and have no clue how to. I googled that ass, but couldn't find anything basic enough.
The server is linux and I am on a mac w/OS X. I have downloaded the targz package from sourcefourge and have a root password, but have no idea about how to install it on the server.
Any help would be awesome.

wow. i had to do the same today myself. But server here at work wouldn't allow me to install anything. So had to contact the ppl who provide hosting. It was a bitch to figure how to install that thing, still have no clue.

Did you switch to a VPS?
- deanstag0
Crap. It looks like the host doesn't want to help me out at all.

I love that you said "googled that ass."
- deanstag0
I think so. It's the AS w/ media temple
- deanstag0
More precisely:
I think it is VPS. It's the AS w/ media temple

That's a big step :)
regarding image::magick - did you dl the source or binary version? If your not comfortable w/ performing a source install you should grab the binary version for now:
- cosmo0
solid, do i have to compile the binaries in anyway? or do i just upload them straight to the server?
- deanstag0
Ok, so I downloaded the unix binary version for mac os x (is that the version I should have downloaded?). So what should I do next?
Thanks in advance.

First: do you have an SSH client program? Your going to need one, and your going to need to get *very* well acquainted with it if you plan on admining a VPS/AS server:
- cosmo0
i hate doing these compile crap.
- sparker0
um. to make your life easier you should just issue this at the cl.
$ cpan install Image::Magick
it is a cpan module for perl.
don't compile Image::Magick from source unless your a masochist.
- sparker0
and whomever your host is needs a swift nut kick for not offering to install a fucking cpan mod.
chimps.

Cosmo: if you can find a pre-built "rpm" binary for the server's os (I'm assuming it's Linux) then you have to a) upload it to a temp directory on the server, and b) run the following command:
rpm --test -Uvh nameOfFile
where "nameOfFile" is the file you just uploaded.
On the other hand, if you grabbed a source version, then you need to upload and compile .. basic instructions should be in a readme file ..
- Solid0
Or do what sparker said lol
SSH into your server and install the PERL version ;)
- Solid0
sparker - I don't know which would be worse .. if CPAN isn't installed/configed on the VPS, then it could be a PITA too ..
- cosmo0
see i tried that earlier today. But it wouldn't allow me to install anything.
- Solid0
Do you have root privileges? Are you on a AS server like deanstag?
- sparker0
then your "host" needs more than a nut kick.
is this a dedicated box? or shared? (i.e. are you on a host with a 'billion' other clients or your own box?)
could be a root issue. have you tried using sudo to do it?
$ sudo cpan install Image::Magick
ok, some basic questions.
1) dedicated box?
2) distribution?
3) root access?

Honestly, I don't know how experienced you guys are, but if this is the first time you've had to admin a server, you've definitely taken a big step ...
it can be a time-consuming learning curve ...
