classic cars = bottomless pit.
if you've got a shed load of cash to throw at it and you know a lot about cars go for it. otherwise use the cash you'd spend on getting something that doesn't need so much love, attention and ££.

if your going to do it though
change every single fluid including the gas
siphon it out
replace tires and filters
if it drives for 100 miles change all the fluids again even the gas
seriously
if it makes it another 500
do it all again even the gas
seriously
after that good luck with your money pit

If that 500 isn't a problem for you, that sounds like a great buy. When purchasing a classic car, having it run is the least of any worries. Just make sure that your car is complete. From the exterior and interior, those item are the most costly when restoring to original condition.
I've been very into this process for half a year now and from that I advise, 500 is a great price for anything.

It is advised that car should be in use (or any object with moving parts for that matter) once a month at least. If that car has stood 25 years then i'm sure that it takes a lot of money to make it work properly cuz metal like any other fabric gives in to time.

for $500?!?!? jezus fucking christ. by it! now!
- rabattski0
by it = buy it. duh.
btw is it a diesel or just gas? and the mileage?
- Spix0
i'm just a bit worried since it have not been running in 25 years...but i guess 500 dollars aint much...
- Spix0
it is a gas....dont know the mileage..forgot to ask and look..
- rabattski0
that doesn't say anything at all dude. mercedes is a very durable car. especially ones from that period. do as cloned suggested, replace all filters, all fluids, tires. first start could be problematic, after that, ready set go. it's not gonna be a money pit.

but depends on the mileage (and if it's gas or diesel). technically it's a very simple car, so it's easy to fix, some parts are hard to get by, like the grill and the headlights. but technically it's no big deal.

a uk site but have a look. there's a lot of old merc knowledge here.
- Spix0
hmm...yeah it is tempting...very tempting...
- Spix0
it's a gas...is that good or bad?
- rabattski0
dude, i wouldn't even have doubts about it, i wish i could run into such a bargain here. and this is mercedes country you know.
- rabattski0
diesel engines last longer than gas engines, so mileage is an issue.
- rabattski0
did the seller really kept to the yearly checks? check the paperwork if there's any, should say about problems and when what was fixed / replaced (if it's done accordingly / by the "rules").

service history, that's what i meant.
